How to add contacts to Gmail?

Managing your inbox is a tiresome task, but one way to make it effortless and easier is to gain an add on the benefit of Gmail's Contacts features. Unlike smartphone contact, Gmail also provides the facility to add contacts to your Gmail account. You can add a contact either by using the user’s email address or directly by selecting their name. In this tutorial, we will learn the step-by-step procedures to add contacts on Gmail for both the platforms, i.e., Web and Phone.

Once you have added someone's details to your Gmail contact list, Gmail saves it for future use. Next time whenever you want to mail, type the first name, and Gmail will automatically display their email id.

Adding from a Gmail Message

Step 1: Open the Gmail link in your web browser.

Open the https://mail.google.com/mail/ link. It will open your Gmail web application on your browser.

Step 2: Log in to your Account

If you have already signed to your Gmail account before your web browser, it will directly open your Gmail inbox window.
If you login in for the first time, you must enter your aren't signed in, enter your email address and password to continue and access your inbox.

Step 3: Search or locate the email address

Discover the email id of the Gmail account that you want to add to your contacts. For this, either directly use the search panel or scroll down through your inbox.
Once found, open the mail and drag down the mouse pointer where the sender's name appears.

Step 4: Hover your cursor over the sender’s name.

Pointing your mouse to the sender’s name for a couple of seconds will prompt a drop-down window menu.

Step 5: Select the “Add to Contacts” option.

At the bottom of the drop-down window, you will find the “Add to Contacts” option labeled with a blue link (as shown in the below screenshot).

Click on this option to add the person’s details to your contacts list immediately.

Note: For Classic Gmail users, instead of blue, they will find “Add to contacts” placed over a grey background at the bottom of the drop-down window.

Step 6: Fill the required fields

It will take you to another Google tab and will display an Edit Contact window. It will ask for various details. You can add extra details as well by clicking on the 'Show More' option. To save the changes, click on the Save button located at the right corner of the window.

Step 6: Creating contact groups

Gmail also provides the facility to create contact groups. For this, they can add the respective contact to the appropriate group by following the simple steps given below:

Click on Edit Contact > No Label options.
A list of your groups, or labels, will appear.
At last, add the contact to your respective group.

Follow the given steps to check and confirm whether the contact is added to the Gmail list or not:

Step 1: Click on Google apps.

Open your Gmail application on your web browser and log in to your account. On the rightmost corner of your Gmail Inbox window, click on the Google apps icon.

Step 2: Click on Contacts

Another window will pop up, displaying all the Google apps. Click on the Contact options.

Step 3: Locate your added contact.

It will take you to another google tab and will display all the contact information. Scroll down and locate your contact. You will easily find it as the contacts are arranged in alphabetic order.

The steps to add contacts on Gmail mobile app are as follows:

Step 1: Download and Open the Gmail app

From your play store, download the Gmail app. In some smartphones, it comes by default. Once downloaded, double click to open the app.

Step 2: Login or Sign up

Step 3: Select the email address

Choose the email ID that you want to add as a contact. Besides the name of send, you will find an icon; click on the icon.

Step 4: Click on the 'Add contact.'

As soon as you click on the icon, a dialog box will be displayed. Click on the ‘Add contact' option located at the top corner of the window.

Step 5: Create the contact

Another dialog box will be thrown. It gives you the option either to create a new Contact or to update an existing one. As we learn to add a new contact, we will click on the ‘New Contact’ option.

Step 6: Specify the name

Define any custom name with which you want to save your contact. Else you can go with the default email name.

Step 7: Click on OK

Click on the 'OK' button, and you will notice a window will be displayed. (as shown in the below screenshot).

Step 8: Confirm and save the changes

Confirm the contact by clicking on the tick button located on the top right corner of the window.

Finally, your contact will be added successfully to your Gmail contacts list.
