Importance of Cyber Security

After all protective measures, cyber threats are yet a major problem in the cyber industry; therefore, cyber security is mandatory to provide a state of protection from vulnerabilities present in the network. Throughout the world, millions and trillion of systems are connected through servers. That's why it has become mandatory to save data from cyber-attacks.

Need for cyber security in various fields

  • Cyber security is required by organizations and businesses/ enterprises to keep their confidential data and financial and intellectual property safe and secure.
  • Individuals also need cyber security to protect their personal and professional data, such as documents and family/ personal photos.
  • Governmental and public services organizations need cyber security to make the community rely on the services.
  • Students require cyber security to learn how to protect systems and data on different parameters.
  • Cyber security is important in this modern age/ internet age.
  • Cyber security is important in the education sector too.

In this modern age, cyber security is mandatory as the Internet has brought people closer but insecure the data (exposed it to different harmful influences). Cybercriminals are relentless and sophisticated in their attacks. Due to this, cyber security is a must for protection. Various reasons demonstrate the need for cyber security in this modern era.

Increment in technology and smart devices

In this techno-savvy world, each device connected to the internet act as an entry point for cybercriminals. If the device is not managed properly, it gives the criminals or attackers an advantage to breach the security and access security flaws or vulnerabilities for their unethical measures. Smart devices must be handled carefully (giving permissions is the major issue). One wrong click can lead to big consequences. Cyber securities keep consistent monitoring and real-time threat assessment to protect the device.

Easy access to hacking tools

Anyone can access the commercialized resources of cyber cyber-crime that help create damaging cyber-attacks. The Internet is a vast source of information where data is available on different suitable platforms. Pre-designed programs and hacking tools are already available on the Internet, due to which less skilled individuals are becoming a threat to business.

Arise in cost of breaches

A data breach can harm a business regarding finances, reputation, assets loss, etc. A single data breach can lead to a major loss of money or remediation cost. Due to a lack of cyber security, numerous businesses have to deal with numerous cyber-attacks and face downfall, making customers lose their interest and trust in the company/business.

Increment in hacking technology and hackers

With increments in the IoT and technology, hacking has also on the boom. Hacking has been started for security purposes, but hackers started using their knowledge to make money by evil measures over time. Day by day, hacking technology is catching the interest of computer engineers and becoming a threat to users, so cyber security is mandatory for them.

Rise in cybercrime

Cybercriminals are heartless people who don't spare anyone, whether a large scale or small scale firm, individual or other organization. They focus on the money they want to make from all these. According to the reports, more than 23% of cyber-crime has been hiked, and with the emergence of new technology, new types of cyber-crimes and criminals are rapidly increasing.

Some surveys have concluded that about 21.1 billion networked devices globally in 2021 will maximize data exposure internationally. This exposure led to an increase in cyber-crimes to a greater extent, and reports also stated that by 2025 cyber-crime costs can exceed up to $10.5 trillion annually worldwide.

Cyber security saves millions of dollars

As we have learned, cyber-crime has raised the company's losses and expenditure. Cyber security is the only way of saving millions of dollars by applying various techniques and safety measures to protect the data and money.

Protection from viruses and malware

Cyber security provides anti-virus to the system and other preventive measures that protect the system from different viruses and malware like Trojan horses, Phishing, DoS, etc.

Cloud storage needs cyber security.

Nowadays, every company/ business is moving to cloud storage to store their valuable data, but the cloud also needs protection provided by cyber security. Cloud provides unlimited data storage, but it has pit holes for vulnerabilities; therefore, patching their cyber security is the only key.

Growth of IoT devices

With the increment in technology and digital devices, every field of work depends on smart devices; therefore, the government has decided to create smart cities with the Internet of Things. These devices have simplified the work and sped up the tasks, but this speed gives rise to the vulnerabilities for hackers to exploit. Cybercriminals are always a step ahead. Despite all the security measures, they find a way to attempt cyber-crime. The Internet of Things gives a gateway to hacking businesses to explore their knowledge in negative terms.

Importance of cyber security in education

Education is a prominent and basic need in our daily life, and with emerging of new technologies, the style and method of education change. Now education has also been digitized and continues its digital transformation journey. After the pandemic education sector attains total dependency on the online platform. In a few months, remote learning was triggered by the pandemic deteriorated the situation because students and teachers connected to a network with their devices, resulting in numerous vulnerabilities and data breaches. This pandemic has extended to an unbounded period; therefore, education leaders prioritize cybersecurity and steer the organization through the trails ahead.

Education institutes vary in size, stature, and purposes as each institution is established with a learning and business plan that motivates the hackers. A major requirement of cyber security has been seen during the pandemic as all parents and teachers are not aware of the use of technology that became entry points to the hackers. Hackers created fake/ dummy websites of schools and made parents use them for transactions or fetching candidates' details for ransom. Due to this, parents and school administration have to bear losses (data and financial).

Importance of cyber security in the health industry

The health care industry is the biggest target for cyber crimes because it has health care information, doctors' and patients' personal information, and some valuable insights in their database, which is the target of the cybercriminals. The health care industry also includes biology labs and research centers where experiments are conducted for new inventions. This sensitive information needs to be protected from hackers as they sell this confidential information against our country for some money. With the emergence of new technologies in the health care industry, it is becoming susceptible to online attacks, compromising confidential information, and other day-to-day threats.

The worst scenario has been seen in the pandemic, where lakhs of people are affected by cyber-attack on the health industry. People were already terrified of their health, and hackers took advantage of this situation. In the name of reputed organizations, pharmacies send links, fake messages, and attachments to the user to fetch their personal information and make them do payments. Previously, the healthcare industry used a third party to maintain their data and records, which hackers easily targeted, and the database provided wrong information.

Even the worse situation arose during Covid-19, where several lives were lost due to the availability of wrong information. So cyber security is a necessity for the health industry in various terms.

Methods used to improve the industrial cyber security profile:

  • Timely updation of security software
  • Proper distribution of security software
  • Continuous consumer education
  • Latest mobiles and their enhanced features
  • Policy enforcement
  • Users must be notified of being used in unsecured network connections
  • Personal credential information of the user must be protected
  • Mobile must be secured by applying passwords and login details
  • Securing messages protocols
  • Customers should be updated and educated regarding cyber-attacks and cyber-crimes

Conclusion

Cyber security is essential in preventing cyber-crimes from happening daily as more and more data breaches are taking place every year than ever before. A good cyber security practice has been notified globally, from household work to professional work, and various industries need to prevent their sensitive data. That's why government and non-governmental organizations are spending more time, money, and resources to improve cyber security measures to prevent and decrease security risks and cyber-attacks.

Reasons for the importance of cyber security:

  • Increment in cyber crimes
  • Cyber security can detect and scan threats and predict attacks
  • Provide a risk management system that reduces the risk.
  • Cyber security provides database and cloud protection.
  • Protection against malware and virus
  • Increment in companies credibility and reputation with users and stakeholders.
  • Security toward the user, customer, and employee data, including their personal information.
