PHP quotemeta() Function

The quotemeta() function in PHP quotes the meta characters and returns a string with a backslash character (\) before some predefine characters.

The predefined characters are as follows:

• period (.)
• backslash (\)
• plus sign (+)
• asterisk (*)
• question mark (?)
• brackets ([])
• caret (^)
• dollar sign ($)
• parenthesis (())

Syntax

quotemeta ( string $str )

Parameter

str(required)- This parameter represents the input string.

Return

This function returns the string with meta characters quoted, or returns FALSE if an empty string is given as str.

Example 1

Output

The actual string:Hello PHP. (This is a quotemeta function!)
After the quotemeta() function...
The new string: Hello PHP\. \(This is a quotemeta function!\) 

Example 2

Output

The actual string:8 + 2 = 10
After the quotemeta() function...
The new string: 8 \+ 2 = 10 

Example 3

Output

The actual string:8 * 2 + 4 = 20
After the quotemeta() function...
The new string: 8 \* 2 \+ 4 = 20
