Text Command in AutoCAD

It creates a text object with a single line.

You may use single-line text to make one or more lines of text, each of which is a separate object that you can move, format, or otherwise change. Select choices from the shortcut menu by right-clicking in the text field. While in the TEXT command, type:

  • To create a new set of single-line text rows, click anywhere else in the design.
  • To navigate between the sets of single-line text, use Tab or Shift+Tab.
  • To modify a group of text lines, hold down Alt and click a text object.

These actions are no longer available once you exit the TEXT command.

Pressing Enter at the Specify Start Point of Text box bypasses the prompts for paper height and rotation angle if TEXT was the last command input. The text you type in the text field will appear beneath the preceding line of text. The insertion point of the text is likewise saved at the point you indicated at the prompt.

Text written with TEXT displays the Edit Text dialogue box if the TEXTED system variable is set to 1. The In-Place Text Editor appears when TEXTED is set to 2.

Unicode strings and control codes can be used to enter special characters and format text.

Note: Text that would be difficult to see normally (due to its size, orientation, or rotation) is presented at a comprehensible size and orientated horizontally so that you may read and alter it easily.

The following prompts will appear.

Point of departure

Sets the text object's starting point. Single-line text should be entered in the In-Place Text Editor.

If the current text style is not annotative and does not have a fixed height, the Specify Height question appears

If the current text style is annotative, the Specify Paper Text Height box appears.

Text Command in AutoCAD

Justify

Controls the text's justification.

You may also use the Specify Start Point of Text popup to input any of these options.

Left

The text is left-justified at the specified baseline, which you define with a point.

Text Command in AutoCAD

Center

Text is aligned from the baseline's horizontal center, which you may set using a point.

The rotation angle determines how the text baseline is oriented in relation to the center point. By naming a point, you may indicate the angle. From the start position until the chosen point, the text baseline runs. The text is rendered upside down if you provide a point to the left of the center point.

Text Command in AutoCAD

Right

The text is right-justified at the specified baseline, which you define with a point.

Text Command in AutoCAD

Align

By defining the baseline's endpoints, you may specify both text height and text orientation.

The characters' size changes in accordance to their height. The characters become shorter as the text string grows longer.

Text Command in AutoCAD

Middle

Text is aligned at the baseline's horizontal center and the height you specify vertical center. Text that is positioned in the middle does not rest on the baseline.

In contrast to the MC option, the Middle option utilizes the middle of all text, including descenders. The MC option utilizes the height of capital letters at their middle.

Text Command in AutoCAD

Fit

This property specifies that text fits inside an area and at a height determined by two points. Only works with horizontally aligned text.

Text Command in AutoCAD

The height of the capital letters from the baseline is measured in drawing units. The distance between the start points and a point you select is known as designated text height. The letters become thinner as the text string grows longer. The characters' height remains constant.

TL;DR (Top Left)

Text is left-justified at a defined position at the top of the text. Only works with horizontally aligned text.

Text Command in AutoCAD

T.C. (Top Center)

Text is centered at a defined position at the top of the text. Only works with horizontally aligned text.

Text Command in AutoCAD

TR (Top Right)

Text is right-justified at a defined position at the top of the text. Only works with horizontally aligned text.

Text Command in AutoCAD

M.L. (Middle Left)

Text is left-justified at a defined position in the middle of the text. Only works with horizontally aligned text.

Text Command in AutoCAD

 M.C. (Middle Center)

At the center of the text, the text is both horizontally and vertically centered. Only works with horizontally aligned text.
