Tableau file Extensions

Tableau data file Extensions

The output of Tableau’s data analysis can be saved in different formats, which further can be distributed on different platforms. The various forms are reflected as different file categories, and they are recognized or identified by multiple different extensions. Their extensions depend on how they are produced and for what purposes they are used and what format they have used. They all are generally stored as XML file format, which can be opened and edited. The description of each file extension and its usage are mentioned below:
Type File Extension Purpose
Tableau Bookmark abc.tbm Tableau Bookmark format contains a single datasheet that can be shared easily to be pasted into other workbooks.
Tableau Data Extract abc.tde Tableau Data Extract format contains the data which is used in a .twb file in a compressed columnar data format. It helps in storage optimization. It also saves the combined calculations that are used in the data analysis. But in this, the file should be refreshed to get the updated information from the data source.
Tableau Data Source abc.tds Tableau Data Source file format fetches the details of the connection which is used to create the tableau report. In the connection details, it stores the source type (excel/relational/sap, etc.) of the file as well as the data types of the columns.
Tableau Packaged Data source abc.tdsx Tableau Packaged Data Source (.tdsx) extension is very similar to the .tds file. But it has an addition of data along with the connection details.
Tableau Packaged Workbook abc.twbx This format contains the details of a datasheet as well as the local information that is used in the data analysis. Its purpose is to share the output with other Tableau desktop or Tableau reader users.
Tableau Workbook abc.twb Tableau Workbook extension contains the information on every dashboard and sheet which is present in a workbook. It has the complete report of the fields that are used in each view and also represents all the formula which is applied to the aggregation of the measures. It has features unlike the various formatting and styles options for the datasheet. It also contains the data source connection information and the metadata information that is created for that connection.
Tableau Preferences abc.tps This file stores the color preference which is used across all the datasheets. It is primarily used to generate customized look and feel for the users.
