Defect Triage Meeting

The main application of Defect Triage (sometimes referred to as Bug Triage) is in software testing. It is necessary to describe the faults' importance and seriousness. The severity of a problem is determined by how much it affects the creation or use of the component application that is being tested. Priority is the sequence in which a flaw must be fixed or resolved. Defect triage is essentially a method that aims to rebalance the process, which is typically problematic for the test team due to a lack of necessary resources. Defects are typically prioritized in defect triage based only on their severity, likelihood of recurrence, risk, etc. Triage is a term from French that means "Sorting." Typically, testers will first find a flaw or problem before rating its risk, probability of recurrence, and severity. Defect triage is used to help address and resolve as many flaws as possible based only on the severity and importance of the issues when there are more defects than testers can verify it.

What is Defect Triage Meeting?

Each flaw or problem is discussed in detail at this meeting. In this meeting, it is agreed on the severity and priority of the flaws and problems. The primary objective of this conference is to evaluate, recognize, assign, or provide a remedy for any problems or issues.

Several questions also arise during the meeting as given below:

• Is the bug valid or not?
• Is the issue reproducible or not?
• Does the defect worth correction or not?
• When should I fix a defect or bug?

As the name implies, Defect Triage Meetings are project gatherings where defects or bugs are classified into several categories.

These categories are given below:

• Defects to fix now : This category includes any flaws that must be fixed right away or will result in more harm than they are worth. To correct and address flaws that fall within this category, there are several resources accessible.
• Defects to fix later : This category includes all flaws that aren't now in need of repair or resolution and do little harm. These issues can be fixed later.
• Defects we’ll never fix : This group includes all flaws that do not harm the system and do not have to be fixed or corrected.

The frequency of defect meetings often depends on the state of the project. Defect triage meeting frequency is determined by the following factors:

• Number of flaws in the system in general
• Project Schedule
• Project Health
• Effect on team members' availability and work schedules

What details should be present when the flaw or issue is triggered?

• To determine whether the tester-provided information about a fault is sufficient for developers to grasp it without difficulty.
• To verify that the problem is recorded under the appropriate project and module.
• To verify that each and every bug or defect does have a Severity and Priority field.
• This is due to the fact that a proper triage mechanism only assigns and updates both problem severity and priority.
