The Indian Museum in Kolkata is India's oldest and largest multidisciplinary museum. It contains a huge collection of items dating back to ancient periods that reflect the story of India's social and cultural history. Unlike most other museums in the nation, the Indian Museum focuses on certain topics or areas, exhibits art, zoology, anthropology, and botany, among other fields.

Location

The Indian Museum is housed in Chowringhee, on Kolkata's iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Road. The best way to reach the museum is to use the metro or a taxi cab. Park Street is the closest metro station from which a bus or cab may be taken.

History

The Indian Museum was founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal. The Society was formed in 1784 to incorporate information and preserve humanity's natural and cultural resources. Even though the Society's members introduced establishing a museum in 1796, it took 1808 to build on Park Street. The museum's large collection of objects is organized into six categories: art, zoology, anthropology, geology, archaeology, and economic botany. It contains a number of galleries containing a wide range of locally and internationally items, including antiques, armors, and Mughal paintings, as well as mummies, fossils, and skeletons.

Architecture

Another architectural masterpiece that has endured the legacy is the present Indian Museum building. The most famous Victorian architect, Walter Granville, designed the structure, responsible for many of Kolkata's icons. In 1875, the museum was built at the cost of Rupees 1,40,000. The structure is divided into three stores, each measuring about 930 square meters. Each contains 60 galleries with six major areas.

The Indian Museum's collection has some of the best and rarest collections in each gallery. It is divided into six categories. Let's discuss all six categories in brief and observe what they contain.

Archaeology Section

It contains the Bharhut Gallery, the Pre- and Proto-Historic Gallery, the Long Archaeology Gallery, the Main Entrance Gallery, the Minor Art Gallery, the Bronze Gallery, the Gandhara Gallery, and the Egyptian Gallery.

Art Section
Largest Museum In India

Paintings from all over the world and textile and decorative arts may be seen in the art galleries. This category includes Mughal Painting Galleries, Bengal Painting Galleries, Decorative Art and Textile Galleries, and Southeast Asian Galleries.

Anthropology Section

Timings of Indian Museum

There are two times allocated for the visitor to visit the Indian museum. For the normal day, it is eight and half hours while it is exceeded to 10 hours for the weekend. The visitor must know the open timing of the Indian museum for non-weekend, i.e., for Tuesday to Friday, and it is 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM as per Indian standard time. While for the weekend, i.e., from Saturday to Sunday, it is 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. At the same time, the museum remains closed on Mondays as well as on public holidays.

Entry Fees at Indian Museum

The amount is fixed based on the individual's age and the citizen from another country regarding the entry fee. Indian Adults need to pay Rupees 50 while Indian Children above five years need to pay Rupees 20 to enter the India Museum. There is a huge difference in the entry fee for foreign nationals, which is around Rupees 500.
