List of NITs in India

NIT - RESOURCES TO INCREASE EDUCATIONAL CALIBRE

These institutions are leading engineering institutes in India administered under the ministry of education; they are declared as institutions of national importance. They are bound by a council called the Council of NITSER. There are nearly 31 NITs in India. In 1959, there was an institution called Regional Engineering College. These are the colleges that topped regional areas. They benchmark the best quality of education in their region. There were 17 REC. Each institution has a concurrent issue between the state and central government. Six more institutions were added by the year 1967, then the rest gradually developed in forthcoming years. In 2002, these REC were promoted to the status of NIT.

1. NIT Allahabad

Founded in 1961, established over 2002 as NIT. It is formerly called Motilal Nehru REC. Its motto is Success is born out of action. It has a student capacity of 5167 undergraduates, 1088 postgraduates, and 512 doctoral students. The college has been recognized by AICTE as a college for quality improvement. It had its Golden Jubilee in the year 2011. Students are recruited through the Joint Entrance Exam.  It offers 19 postgraduate programs for a two-year duration in MTech. It has a new postgraduate course in a different field called Mathematics and Scientific Computing. It offers a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Mathematics.

In 2021, according to NIRF, it had been ranked 88 in overall colleges and 42 among engineering colleges. Sanjiv Chaturvedi, an IFS officer who had handled cases of corruption and won the Ramon Magsaysay award, was a former alumnus. Deep Joshi, Atul Shobt, and B.N. Singh were another notable alumnus of this college.

2. NIT Andhra Pradesh

Located at Tadepalligudem in Godavari district, Established in the year 2013 with the motto of hardworking triumphs. It is built in the fertile land of India, and it is known for its water abundance for cotton cultivation. This NIT shares a common visitor, a most powerful position held by our first citizens of India. Finance is managed by the financial board of this NIT. This follows a typical hierarchy in organizing things. Admission is based on the student’s JEE marks and cut-off. This institute has been recognized as the best institution in south India by the Centre of education, growth, and research in the year 2021, crowned during the Rashtriya Shikshak Purashkar Gaurav Award.

3. NIT Bhopal

Also called Maulana Azad National Institute, it is named after India’s first education minister and activist Abul Kalam Azad. Established on 4th September 1960 with a tally of 5014 students. It was under the 8 REC established on the first try. Foundation laid by Jawaharlal Nehru on 23 April 1961. This also provides MBA courses from the year 2006. The campus is spread over 650 acres. This is organized under the board of governors. Notable alumni include Ajit Jogi, first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh; P.C Sharma, Director of the central bureau of investigation in the period of 2001 to 2003; Suresh Pachauri, Naveen Polishetty, recent entertainment star in Tollywood and Rajeev Verma, and more.

4. NIT Agartala

This was established under India’s Ministry of Human Resources development as Tripura engineering college in 1965. It has its motto that knowledge is the supreme power. It is present in a wide area of 365.6 acres. Courses concerning computer science and engineering began from 1999 to 2000. Three new degrees have begun from 2005 electrical and electronic; production and Transport engineering.

On 23 February 2006, the union cabinet approved the proposal of the state government for the conversion of Tripura engineering college into a prestigious national institute of technology. Seats were increased from 250 to 420 by the year 2007 to 2008. By the year 2003, the national board of accreditation gave accreditation for mechanical and civil engineering for five years and electrical engineering for two years. It ranked 92 among all engineering colleges in India by national institutional ranking and framework. They hold the cultural fest under the name Moksha. They also conduct a tech-fest under the name Aayam.

5. NIT Arunachal Pradesh

Situated near Itanagar, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh. It had a temporary campus in Yupia since 2010. It has its motto that certainly there is no purifier in this world like knowledge. It functions as an autonomous technical institute under the ministry of education. It has the president of India as its visitor. It was ranked 160 among engineering colleges according to the national institutional ranking framework in the year 2021.

6. NIT Calicut

This is situated in Kozhikode and is an institute of national importance as in the NIT Act passed through parliament. There is also a supercomputer and a new course called Nanotechnology. Its motto is ‘From darkness lead us into Light’. It was established by the year 1961. It has a campus covering 120 hectares of land. In 1987, the college celebrated its silver jubilee. Indian Institute of Management, Calicut, worked as a temporary functional institute till a permanent institute was built at Kunnamangalam. It acquired its NIT status from the year 2002.

There is a technology business incubator built with the help of the Department of technology and science and the national science and technology entrepreneurship development board. It has a main ambition to create creative job opportunities, supporting a technology-based industry. It has eleven academic departments, eight centers, and three schools.  In architecture, it was ranked 2nd. It was also ranked 9th in ARIIA’21 in the category of centrally funded institutions.

7. NIT Delhi

It was established in the year 2010, situated in New Delhi. It was established after the 11th five-year plan. For the first batch, three undergraduate courses were established. NIT, Warangal is the mentor institute of the national institute of technology, Delhi. Currently, they have five courses functioning in this college. This is controlled by a council of members governed by a board of governors. Fifty percent of seats are occupied by the home state category of Delhi and Chandigarh. Reserved seats for foreign students are four in number.

8. NIT Durgapur

It is a public engineering college, present in Durgapur, West Bengal, which has been functional since 1960. It is located on 187 acres of land. It has its motto of Work Maketh a Man. It has a student population of 4247. According to a national institutional ranking framework, it is ranked 29th in engineering colleges, and according to the overall ranking, it ranked 71. It was established through parliament act as a cooperative venture between central and state government. With the approval of the University Grant Commission, it was granted the position of the university. It was the first university to be selected for a technical education quality improvement program. Even Shri. Pranab Mukherjee addressed its efforts through research and service.

9. NIT Goa

Founded in 2010, with the motto of true knowledge liberates. It is located in Farmagudi. It was planned in the 11th five-year plan under the budget of INR 250 crores. It is mentored by the national institute of technology, Surathkal. Fifty percent of seats are allocated for the citizens of Goa. This reservation was sought by the previous Goa chief minister Shri. Manohar Parrikar. There are 5 undergraduate departments and three postgraduate departments.

10. NIT Jaipur

Also called as Malaviya national institute of technology. Located in Jaipur. It has a motto of diligence leads to excellence. It was founded in 1963 with just 2 branches, and now it has 14 departments.  It was announced as a deemed university on 26 June 2006. It was selected to participate in the technical education quality improvement program of the Indian government and the world bank. It was ranked 35 in overall engineering colleges in India, according to NIRF. It has great collaboration with international universities such as North Dakota university, Deakin university, university of Greenwich, London, etc. Notable alumni include Ashok M. Raichur, notable nanotechnologist and Shivangi, Indian navy first woman pilot, etc.

11. NIT Jalandhar

Also called Dr. B.R.Ambedkar national institute of technology. Previously called as Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar. The motto of this college is hail Saraswathi. It has total student strength of 4700. It was given the status of the university on October 17, 2002.  There are 15 academic departments in this institute. It conducts a cultural fest Utkarsh during the semester. This is a three-tier event at the end of March. It also conducts a technological event called TechNITI conducted in mid-September. Notable alumni include Anindya Ghose.

12. NIT Jamshedpur

It is located in Jamshedpur. It was established on 15 August 1960. On 27 December 2002, it was recognized as a university. It is established in the second five-year plan as a third establishment. It is established over 325 acres of land. It is now present as the state National Institute of technology of Jharkhand. It also has Ojass, a techno fest to showcase technical empowerment. Urja, the annual athletic program, the cultural fest is also present. Technica, an annual metallurgical fest, is carried out. Malli Mastan Babu, the fastest 7 summiteers in the world; Ku Man Ghising, former MD of Nepal Electricity Authority, are alumni of NIT Jamshedpur.

13. NIT Karnataka

It is also known as NIT Surathkal.  It also serves as the major route for NH 66. It has another campus in the Arabian Sea. It has the motto of work is worship. It was made from the efforts of Srinivas Mallya and V.S.Kudva, and the area is now called Srinivasnagar in his honor. Three undergraduate courses are present in this engineering college. In 1966, the college had its first postgraduate course in Marine structure and industrial structure.

14. NIT Hamirpur

National Institute of technology, in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. No substitute for hard work is the motto of this national institute of technology. It was established in 1986. It is spread over an area of 320 acres. Department of architecture was established in 2000. Notable alumni include Dr. Mohit Kumar and Vijay Kumar Thakur. It was ranked at 99th positionin All Indian ranking of engineering colleges. It also has two centers of excellence.

15. NIT Kurukshetra

It has the motto of hard work and consistent efforts. It has 3600 students. It was established by Jawaharlal Nehru. These regional engineering colleges were unified by a common entrance exam. It is ranked 41 in overall engineering colleges by NIRF. It has a cultural fest called Confluence, a three-day event, and a technological event called Techspardha as a hub of opportunity in technology. Notable alumni include Pawan Munjal, Srini Raju, Rakesh Bakshi, and S.N.Subramaniam.

16. NIT Manipur

Situated in Imphal, had its first batch in 2010. It was made functional through notification no.28 of 2012 dated 7th June. University rankings, according to NIRF, is 114. It received its research funding with a total amount of INR 5 crores. It has initiatives like Atal innovation hub, incubation hub, and internal revenue generation. It has a total of 6 departments.

17. NIT Meghalaya

It had its first batch in 2010. It was considered an institute of national importance under the act of 2007. Foundation was laid by the former human resources minister Shri. Kapil Sibal.  The first two batches carried out their course under the mentor institute of NIT, Surat. It was ranked 59 according to the NIRF in the year 2021.

18. NIT Nagaland

It is situated in Chumukedima, Nagaland. It was made functional after the five-year plan in 2009. It had mentorship effectively under NIT Silchar. It has its motto of education is power. It has mentored its first four batches under NIT Silchar. It is managed by NIT Nagaland Society registered under the societies act. It has six undergraduate courses and four master courses.

19. NIT Nagpur

It was known as Visvesvaraya National Institute of technology. It is located in Nagpur. It was established in 1960. It has a total number of 4925 students. It was a joint success of the Maharashtra government and central government, with its history dating back to post-independence. According to TIMES WORLD, it ranked 1001 plus, and according to TIMES ASIA, it secured 301 to 350 rank. According to NIRF, it ranked 30, and according to OUTLOOK INDIA, it secured 15th rank.

20. NIT Rourkela

It was established in 1960. It has a total strength of 5648. It is situated over an area of 486 hectares. It has over 5648 students and 20 departments. It has its foundation stone laid by Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru. Notable alumni include Debasish Ghose, Damodar Acharya, etc.

21. NIT Silchar

Established in 1967, It has its motto of may our education be brilliant and radiant. Located in Silchar, on 625 acres of land. It has 11 undergraduate courses. It has the president of India as its visitor. An Annual technological fest called TECHNOESIS is held in this college.

22. NIT Surat

It is also called as Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology. It has its function over the automobile workforce. It was selected as the center of excellence in water resource management. It organizes mind bend, a techno fest, and Sparsh, a cultural fest.

23. NIT Srinagar

It is controlled by the ministry of education. It laid its foundation stone as a part of a second five-year plan. It has a motto of leading me from darkness to light. It has a student population of 3845. It has its upgradation from REC to NIT by the year 2003. On 15 August 2007, it became an institution of national importance. It has 8 engineering departments.

24. NIT Trichy

It is situated in Tiruchirapalli, a city in Tamil Nadu. It was granted its position of deemed university by the year 2003 with the approval of UGC. It has its motto of truth alone triumphs. With the total student population of 6358 and 17 departments under various disciplines, it stands out as unique. It was honored as the university of the year by the Federation of Indian commerce and industry. It has been the number one NIT among all other institutes for six consecutive years. It has been ranked 23 among all colleges and 9 among engineering colleges according to NIRF. Notable alumni include Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Rajesh Gopinath, R.Ravimohan, and the present finance minister of Tamil Nadu Palanivel Thiagarajan.

25. NIT Patna

It is located in Patna, Bihar. It was formerly called Bihar school of engineering and changed its name to NIT Patna on 28th January 2004. It made its beginning in 1886. This is the sixth oldest engineering college in India. It has its motto of hard work and consistent efforts. It covers an area of 40 acres. It ranks 72 among engineering colleges across India, according to NIRF.

26. NIT Raipur

Founded in 1956 with only two disciplines. It has its motto of letting the raise of goodness happen every day. The student population of this college is 4304.  It has a growth program supported by World Bank called a technical education quality improvement program. It also follows strict reservation guidelines quoted by Supreme Court.

27. NIT Puducherry

It is located in Puducherry, a union territory. It was established in the year 2010. It was a part of the 11th five-year plan to make it functional. It works under a proper hierarchy. It has a home state reservation of 50 percent for Pondicherry students.

28. NIT Sikkim

It is situated in Ravangla, a place in Sikkim. It is functional under the ministry of education. It has its motto of move on. It was established by the year 2010 as a part of the 11th five-year plan. It has both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

29. NIT Uttarakhand

NIT Uttarakhand was founded in 2009. It has its motto that knowledge is maintained through practice and hardship. It is located in the Pauri Garhwal district, which is a temporary campus. It has its permanent campus at Sumari. Admissions are carried out through JEE MAINS for undergraduates and through GATE for postgraduates.

30. NIT Mizoram

National Institute of Technology Mizoram was established in the year 2007. It is considered as the institute of national importance by an Act of Parliament. It is an autonomous university with all its courses affiliated with AICTE. NIT Mizoram offers different undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses. Admission to this university is based on the marks scored by a candidate in JEE exam or GATE exam.

31. NIT Warangal

It had its foundation laid by former prime minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1959. It has its motto of one who works shall succeed. It has a total student population of 5782. It has many notable alumni, including Padma kuppa, Pushmeet Kohli, Sujatha Gidla, etc. Ranked 19th among engineering colleges in India according to NIRF.

There are also several other national institutes of technology functioning in India. This has always been the pillar of the success of growth in engineering across India. With the rise of more Aryabhatta and Visvesveraya, they play a great role.
