What are the effects of Acid Rain on Taj Mahal?

Fossil fuel burning results in the production of air-polluting gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in factories, thermal power plants, oil refineries and cars that burn petrol and diesel as well as coal and oil. Sulfur dioxide interacts with atmospheric water vapor to produce sulfuric acid, whereas nitrogen oxides combine with atmospheric water vapor to form nitric acid. Acid rain is created when gaseous oxygen mixes with raindrops, which is how rain clouds are often generated from clean water.

Let's now talk about what acid rain is, how it forms, and how it affects the Taj Mahal.

What is an Acid Rain?

Acid rain is made up of extremely acidic water droplets that develop when air pollutants, particularly the excessive amounts of sulfur and nitrogen generated by vehicles and manufacturing processes, are present. Since it refers to a variety of acidic precipitation, this concept is occasionally referred to as "acid rain." Acidic deposition comes in wet and dry forms. In the absence of precipitation, dangerous dry deposition of gasses and particles sticks to the ground via smoke and dust. Consequently, causes the creation of acid rain, which is defined as:

When air pollutants such nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides mix with rainfall and fall as rain, the result is known as acid rain.

Formation of Acid Rain

Sulfur and nitrogen particles react with the moist components of rain to form acid rain. The word "acid rain" was first used in 1852, according to Scottish chemist Robert Smith, who is credited by the Royal Society of Chemistry as being the originator of the term. While doing studies on the chemistry of rainfall in Scottish and English industrial cities, Smith came up with the phrase. Following are the reactions that take place:

CO2 (g) + H2O (l) ⇌ H2CO3 (aq)

The ph of this rainfall is around 5.7, making it acidic. Nitrogen and sulfur oxides are discharged into the air as an outcome of human activity, mostly resulting in acid rain. Using fossil fuels and unethical waste disposal techniques are two examples. Before interacting with water to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid, respectively, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are oxidized. The major trends will help to clarify the acid production process:

O2 (g) + 2SO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) → 2H2SO4 (aq)
O2 (g) + 4NO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) → 4HNO3 (aq)

Effects of Acid Rain

  • Crops, plants, and animals all suffer significant losses as a result of acid rain. It eliminates the nutrients required for plant growth and survival. Because acid rain alters the soil's chemical composition, it has an effect on agriculture.
  • It irritates both human and animal lungs.
  • When acid rain enters rivers and ponds, it affects the aquatic environment. because it alters the water's chemical composition in a way that is detrimental to the health of the aquatic ecosystem and causes pollution.
  • Acid rain causes water pipes to corrode. Heavy metals like iron, lead, and copper, therefore, penetrate into drinking water.

Damage to Taj Mahal due to Acid Rain

  • The Taj Mahal in Agra is a magnificent historical building made entirely of white marble.
  • Experts have warned that the Taj Mahal's white marble is gradually corroding and changing color due to air pollution in this area. This puts the Taj Mahal's beauty in danger.
  • Different firms in and around Agra, including the Mathura Oil Refinery, discharge gaseous pollutants into the atmosphere that contribute to acid rain, such as Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The Taj Mahal monument's marble (calcium carbonate) corrodes with time as a result of acid rain's acids reacting with it.
  • Several factories in Agra emit nitrogen oxides and sulfates into the air. As a result, the problem is exacerbated by people's continued use of firewood and coal of inferior quality for residential use. Marble (calcium carbonate) responds to acid rain as follows:
 H2SO4 + CaCO3 → CaSO4 + H2O + CO2
  • The term "marble cancer" describes the progressive erosion of a monument's marble by acid rain. The pristine white marble of the Taj Mahal becomes yellow due to the suspended particulate matter, such as soot particles, emitted in the smoke from the Mathura Oil Refinery.

Preventive Measures

  1. The only preventative action we can take to stop acid rain is to limit emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides.
  2. We have already seen the specifics of acid rain and how it harms wildlife, vegetation, and historical sites.
