List of IIMs in India

We have all heard the word 'manage' in our daily lives, and we often use it when we have a full calendar of events that all occupy our time. As a result, we frequently discuss activity management. Thus, word management is not new to us, but it has a very scientific foundation when studied in depth. In an organization, management refers to the behaviour that is responsible for making decisions that define how human and physical resources are allocated.

So, in order to keep its business going forward, every organization has a structure, which is why it employs a variety of managers, ranging from the CEO to front-line supervisors. Moreover, when we go to the top, the number of managers decreases. Every organization's manager is expected to complete a set of activities in accordance with their positions, and the abilities needed to do so can be acquired through a degree in organizational management.

Some of the tasks that a manager should perform in any organization are as follows:

1) Planning - Planning entails creating a plan or blueprint ahead of time and then determining the strategies and resources required to put those plans into action.

2) Organizing - This comes after planning and implies allocating tasks and resources to each department within the organization in order to achieve a common goal.

3)Leading - This is the level of successful communication skills when it is necessary to encourage and energize people while guiding them toward a common objective.

4) Staffing - Without the requisite staff and employees, no organization can function. As a result, management must determine where and in which departments employees are required.

5) Controlling - Nothing will be accomplished unless a thorough examination and consideration are given at the conclusion of the task. A manager's controlling function includes evaluating what has been done and what could be done better in order to improve performance and set standards.

As we can see, a manager must execute a wide range of tasks, thus properly equipping and training employees about this course is also critical. Management is a popular subject of study for those seeking to enter the corporate sector in other countries. Masters in Management for example is popular in Europe as a two-year Masters programme in management studies. In fact, for individuals who do not choose to pursue an MBA, an international master's degree in management is an alternate course.

Foundation and Evolution of IIMs in India

The Indian Institutes of Management or popularly known as IIMs are one of the top management education and research institutes in India that offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate, and executive programmes, as well as some extra business administration courses. On the proposal of the Planning Commission of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, began the establishment of IIMs.

Following India's independence, the Planning Commission was tasked with overseeing and directing the country's growth. In the 1950s, India grew rapidly, and the Commission began to have trouble recruiting qualified managers for the enormous number of public sector firms that were being founded in India as part of its industrial programme. Based on the recommendations of UCLA Professor George Robbins, the Indian government built two top management institutes known as Indian Institutes of Management. The two new institutes were to be located in Calcutta and Ahmedabad, respectively.

Calcutta's Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, or IIM Calcutta, was the first to open its doors on November 13, 1961. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was founded in Ahmedabad in which Harvard Business School was instrumental in the early phases of its foundation.

The success of the two existing IIMs prompted a committee led by Ravi J. Matthai to advocate the establishment of two more IIMs in 1972. The next year, a new IIM was founded in Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) based on the committee's suggestion. It was originally intended to cater only to the demands of public sector firms. The first IIM Review Committee (1981) noticed that the three IIMs were producing approximately 400 PGP graduates each year and had reached their maximum capacity. It suggested that two more IIMs be opened to accommodate the growing need for management professionals. It also suggested that Fellowship programmes, akin to PhD programmes, be expanded to address the rising demand for faculty in India's management schools. On the committee's recommendation, the fourth IIM, IIM Lucknow, was founded in 1984.

In 1996, the fifth and sixth IIMs were founded in Kozhikode and Indore, respectively and IIM Shillong was founded as the seventh IIM in 2007. Since 2007, fourteen additional IIMs have opened, taking the total number to twenty. The most recent, IIM-Jammu, opened in 2016.  Later on, The Lok Sabha passed the IIM bill on July 28, 2017, and the Rajya Sabha passed it on December 19, 2017 conferring IIMs as Institute of National Importance. On December 31, 2017, the IIM bill became law after getting presidential assent.

List of IIMs in India

There are 20 IIMs in India, with the majority of them offering post-graduate, PhD, and executive programmes. Each of the IIMs is a recognised society overseen by its own Board of Governors.

IIMs take the Common Admission Test, or CAT, for admission to their MBA or managerial programmes usually held in November every year. However, the CAT is often considered one of the most challenging entrance exams and Passing the CAT exam is the first step in gaining admission to one of the top IIMs. IIMs assess applicants for the PI/WAT/GD round, which is the second part of the admission procedure, based on CAT scores. The aspirant's profile—such as Composite CAT Score, past academic performance, professional experience, and performance in WAT/GD/PI—is assessed in the second step, following which each IIM releases its own final IIM admission lists.

Following is the list of IIMs in India along with their 2021 NIRF rankings. National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) lays out a mechanism for ranking colleges and universities across the country.

Conclusion

The significance of a management degree originates from the fact that management courses are an excellent medium for improving numerous professional skills such as leadership and entrepreneurship, and the brand value of IIM has grown steadily since its establishment because the institute provides us with a strong theoretical understanding of the business world.

A management degree enables a manager to comprehend every part of the organization, as well as the various decisions made at each management level.

Management studies programs are crucial because it is simpler to fail than thrive without the abilities required to compete with competitors and deal with dynamic environments. This ensures that managers are capable of making the best business decisions in times of emergency and uncertainty, or even better foresee future problems, which is why the IIM is a cauldron of experts in their fields, and interaction with the brightest minds who are now aspiring MBAs improves and broadens the learning experience at an IIM.

Businesses demand proper leadership in a failing economy or they will most likely fail in their operations. There would be few top managers capable of conducting a business in today's continuously shifting economy without management courses since, as they say, there is no alternative for hands-on experience. The majority of prospective MBA's are gradually realizing this, as evidenced by the fact that the percentage of individuals with job experience obtaining MBA degrees has continuously increased over the years. Managerial skills are beneficial not just at work, but also in daily lives. Management studies assist managers in not just dealing with changes in the corporate environment, but also in manipulating these changes to benefit the company.
