The Longest River in India

India is known as the "Land of Rivers" because of the many rivers run here. Himalayan Rivers, the rivers that originate in the Himalayas, and Peninsular Rivers, the rivers that originate in the Peninsula, are the two types of rivers in India. Peninsular rivers receive their water from rain, whereas Himalayan Rivers are persistent.

This article will discuss the largest rivers in India. We will also discuss the major aspects like the origin of this river, the area it covers, etc.

The Longest River In India

The Ganga is India's longest river. Although the Ganga is recognized in Hindi and other Indian languages by its traditional name, the Ganges, it also has official and popular identities. It has been the holiest river for Hindu since ancient times. Across much of its journey, it is a wide and slow stream that runs through one of the world's most productive and densely populated regions.

Length of the Ganga River

The length of the river Ganga is 1,560 miles (2,510 km). Hindus regard it as sacred. It is India's second-largest mangrove structure. It is also known as the "Dakshina Ganga" and is the longest river in South India. Its source is in Maharashtra's the Western Ghats, near Trimbakeshwar.

Origin of the Ganga

The Ganga is an Asian river that runs across India and Bangladesh after originating in the western Himalayas. It separates into two rivers as it enters West Bengal: the Padma and the Hooghly. The Padma River runs across Bangladesh before draining into the Bay of Bengal. Before pouring into the Bay of Bengal, the Hooghly River passes through numerous West Bengal districts. Without question, the Ganga is an essential part of Heritage, life, and culture. It is one of India's four most important rivers. Indus, Brahmaputra, Ganga, and Godavari are those four rivers. The Ganga is the world's third-largest river in water intake and is regarded as the most sacred.

Flow Direction of Ganga River

The Ganga River subsequently travels downstream, changing its route many times and being joined by several other rivers, including the Ramganga, Tamsa, and Gandaki are few of them. The Ganga River also passes through many cities and towns on its journey downstream. Chunar, Mirzapur, Kolkata, Varanasi and Patliputra(Patna) are among them. Many Hindus go to Varanasi to visit the Ganges River, which comes among the purest cities.

The Significance of the Ganga River

The Ganga River is very significant to India's Hindu people for religious reasons and providing drinking water and irrigating crops. The Ganges River is honored and worshipped as the divine Ganga Ma, or "Mother Ganges." The goddess Ganga fell from heaven to live in the Ganges River's waters to preserve, purify, and bring anybody who touches it to heaven, as per the Ganges Mythology. Every day, devout Hindus flock to the river to offer flowers and food to Ganga. To wash and purify their sins, they also drink the water and bathe in the river.

Let's look at five places in the country where you may see the Ganga at its most beautiful scenario.

1. Varanasi

The Longest River In India

Varanasi, formerly known as Kashi, is the world's oldest continuously inhabited city. Being a city with a strong connection to old Hindu beliefs allows visitors to see the Ganga. While there are magnificent Ghats with breathtaking scenery, temples, priests, and other sights will remind visitors of India's ancient religious emotions. A boat trip is also advised for experiencing the full beauty of the river.

2. Kolkata

The Longest River In India

Kolkata, the Joy City, is nearly associated with the Ganga River. It is said that the city developed simply the result of the river's ability to sustain a large population. Moreover, we link the most attractive sites in this city with a riverbank, whether it is the Hooghly Bridge, the Howrah Bridge, or the iconic Princep Ghats. Remember the classic film songs Chingaari from Amar Prem and Piyu Bole from Parineeta, in which a boat is seen navigating the waterways above the magnificent Howrah Bridge.  If you want to see the genuine glory of the Ganga in Kolkata, you must take this boat trip.

3. Allahabad

The Longest River In India

One of the most exciting ways to experience the Ganga in India's Allahabad city. Thousands of Hindu devotees, priests, sadhus, and tourists come to this location for the Kumbh Mela, a religious and socio-cultural combination of huge proportions. Many people see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it is a popular event among travel photographers.

4. Rishikesh

The Longest River In India

Visit Rishikesh if you wish to see the natural glory of the Ganga and its surroundings. Here the Ganga flows down the hills and into the plains. The beautiful green environment that surrounds the blue waters creates some breathtaking sights. There are also magnificent white sand beaches where visitors enjoy camping. There are also popular adventure sports such as whitewater rafting and cliff jumping available.

5. Patna

The Longest River In India

The annual gathering during the Chhath Puja may be seen on the banks of the Ganga in Patna, Bihar. Thousands of worshippers gathered along the Ganga's banks to pray to the Sun God. With fruits, nuts, and other holy items in a Soop (bamboo manufactured utensil) standing in the river, prayer or Argha is offered.

Plant and Animal Life

The Ganges-Yamuna region used to be heavily covered with forest. According to historical data, wild elephants, buffalo, bison, rhinoceroses, lions, and tigers were hunted there in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Ganges basin has lost much of its natural vegetation, and the area is now intensively farmed to suit the demands of an ever-growing population. Except for deer, boars, and wildcats, as well as wolves, jackals, and foxes, there are few large wild creatures. Bengal tigers, crocodiles, and marsh deer may still be found in the Sundarbans area of the delta.

Fish can be found in almost all of the rivers, particularly in the delta area, where they make a local diet. Featherbacks, barbs, walking catfish, gouramis, and milkfish are also uncommon fish in the Bengal area. The Ganges river dolphin, also known as the susu, is a practically sightless creature with highly developed sonar skills that may be found across the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin. However, it is endangered due to increasing human activities.

Pollution of the Ganges River

The Longest River In India

The Ganges River is among the world's most polluted rivers, even after its spiritual significance and daily use for the people of India in several contexts. The Ganges is polluted by human and industrial waste and religious activities due to India's fast development. India's population is presently above 1 billion, with 400 million people living in the Ganges River basin. As a result, they throw a lot of their garbage into the river, including raw sewage. Many individuals also bathe and do their washing in the river. The levels of coliform bacteria in Varanasi are at least 3,000 times greater than what the World Health Organization considers safe.

Ganga Action Plan

Rajiv Gandhi, India's former Prime Minister, launched the Ganga Action Plan in the early 1990s to begin sweeping up the Ganges River. The plan called for the suspension of several polluting industrial units along the river and provided wastewater treatment facilities. Still, the plants are too small to handle the garbage generated by such a huge population. Many polluting industrial plants continue to discharge their hazardous waste into the river as well.

Despite the pollution, the Ganges River is vital to the Indian people and various flora and animals. One of them is the Ganges River dolphin, a highly rare freshwater dolphin found in that region.

Conclusion

Bhagirathi was Ganga's old name, and Kumba Mela is a world-famous event held on the banks of the Ganga in Allahabad. The Ganga, with a length of 2525 kilometers, is India's longest river, flowing fully across the country's Peninsula. It is a holy river, and everyone thinks that drinking a drop of Ganga water or taking a bath into t can help them enter heaven. Ganga is said to have fallen from Load Shiva's head in Hinduism. However, the Ganga is currently India's most polluted river.
