Basic Service Sets (BSS)

The fundamental component of an IEEE 802.11 LAN is the BSS. Each BSS region essentially correlates to a certain number of stations' coverage. The idea behind a BSS is that all stations must be within radio or optical range of one another in order to "hear" one another. The relationship between the stations might change when they move in and out of range or are turned off. Every station must connect to the network in order to join a BSS. These relationships are dynamic and are handled and maintained by a distribution system service (DSS). Through the use of portals, several IEEE 802.11 designs are integrated. These are the locations where a non-IEEE LAN links to an IEEE 802.11 distribution system.

IBSS Networks

A BSS with no backbone infrastructure and at least two wireless stations is known as an IBSS. Or A BSS with no backbone infrastructure and at least two wireless stations is referred to as an IBSS. Because it can be built rapidly and with little advanced design, this form of network is frequently referred to as an ad hoc network. The majority of users who inhabit a limited space, such as a single room, workplace, or residence, will be pleased by the ad hoc wireless network. File transfers between two laptop users might be one of them, and a gathering of coworkers outside the workplace, etc. This need is met by the specification of an "ad hoc" mode of operation in the IEEE 802.11 standard. Since there isn't an access point here, the end-user stations fill in some of its roles. Other access point features like frame-relaying between out-of-range stations or power-saving are not supported.

Advantages of Basic Service Set 

• As BSS has a smaller coverage area, it is more secure.
• Devices or computers communicate with one another without any issues.
• Additionally, AP controls every station in this network, making it easier to move and administer.

Disadvantages of Basic Service Set 

• BSS only has one AP; hence it cannot enable mobility, i.e. Clients are restricted in their ability to move about.
• It only offers wireless communication over small distances.
• BSS only has one AP, but multiple devices, customers, or stations; every station and customer uses the same means to share information and communicate. This can cause some complications during transmission. And therefore, it is advised that BSS should only contain a small number of devices.
