Dim command in AutoCAD

A single command may be used to create many dimensions and dimension kinds.

Find

You can choose one or more of an item's points to dimension it, and then click to establish the dimension line. When you hover over an object, the DIM command automatically generates a preview of the relevant dimension type to use.

The list of supported dimension types includes the following:

  • dimensions that are aligned, vertical, horizontal, and rectangle
  • typical dimensions
  • measures of angles
  • Radius and jogging radius measurements
  • dimensions of diameter
  • Measurements of arc length

Some DIM settings create an operational mode that is in place until modified, like example

  • selecting the linear or angular dimensions of a baseline
  • Continually dimension in angular or linear terms.
  • Dimensions of a radius, diameter, jogging radius, or arc length

Some DIM options offer ways to modify dimensions, such as

  • Align chosen dimensions' dimension lines to a base or reference dimension.
  • Selective dimensions' dimension lines should be offset.
  • Choose a separate layer for any additional dimensions that are produced.

Original first extension line

It provides a linear dimension when two points are specified.

Angular

It creates a dimension with an angle that displays the angle between three places by or the inclination of two lines (same as the DIMANGULAR command).

  • Vertex. specifies the point to be used as the angular dimension's vertex.
  • provide the angle's first side. Names a line that serves as the angle's definition.
  • Give the second angle side. gives the other line that the angle is defined by.
  • Location of an angular dimension. provides information about the arc dimension line's quadrant and position.
    • Mtext. uses the contextual Text Editor tab to edit the dimension text.
    • Text. changes the Command window's dimension text.
    • Text slant. specifies the dimension text's angle.
    • Undo. reaches the previous prompt once more.
  • Undo. reaches the previous prompt once more.

Baseline

It creates a new linear, angular, or ordinate dimension using the first extension line of the previous or selected dimension (same as the DIMBASELINE command).

Note: The base dimension is always the most recent one that was produced.

  • initial extension line start. specifies that the baseline dimension's first extension line should serve as the baseline dimension's extension line origin.
  • Origin of the second extension line. the next edge or angle to dimension is specified.
  • Uses the ordinate dimension's endpoint as the baseline dimension's endpoint for the feature location dimension.
  • Choose: Asks you to pick a dimension—linear, ordinate, or angular—to serve as the baseline for the baseline dimension.
  • Offset. defines the offset value at which the baseline dimensions are calculated.
  • Undo. creates a new baseline dimension that is undone.

Continue

creates a linear, angular, or ordinate dimension using the second extension line of the selected dimension (same as the DIMCONTINUE command).

  • Origin of the second extension line. the next edge or angle to dimension is specified.
  • Geographical feature. use the ordinate dimension's endpoint as the endpoint for the continuing dimension.
  • Choose. Asks you to choose a linear, ordinate, or angular dimension to serve as the foundation for the ongoing dimension.
  • Undo. creates a new baseline dimension that is undone.

Ordinate is an ordinate dimension is created (same as DIMORDINATE command).

  • Geographical feature. Requests a point on a feature, such as the centre, terminus, or intersection of an object.
    • leading edge. determines if the ordinate dimension is an X or a Y ordinate by comparing the distance between the feature position and the leader endpoint. The dimension measures the X ordinate if the difference in the Y ordinate is bigger. If not, it takes the Y ordinate into account.
    • Xdatum. X ordinate is measured, and the leader line and dimension text are oriented accordingly.
    • Ydatum. determines the Y ordinate and the leader line and dimension text's orientation.
    • You may modify the dimension text using the contextual Text Editor tab that is displayed by Mtext.
    • Text. At the Command prompt, you can change the dimension text. Angle brackets are used to display the produced dimension.
    • Angle. specifies the dimension text's angle.
    • Undo. reaches the previous prompt once more.
  • Undo. reaches the previous prompt once more.

Align

It aligns a variety of parallel, concentrically arranged, or identical datum dimensions to a chosen base dimension.

  • Base measurement. specifies a dimension to be the foundation for the alignment of the dimensions.
    • aligning the dimensions chooses the dimensions that will be aligned with the chosen base dimension.

Distribute

It specifies the distribution strategy for a collection of independent linear or ordinate dimensions that have been chosen at random.

  • Equal. distributes all chosen dimensions equally. Three dimension lines are a minimum need for this strategy.
  • Offset. distributes every dimension you've chosen at the offset you've determined.

Layer

It overrides the existing layer and assigns new dimensions to the chosen layer. Enter To utilize the current layer, type Current or ". ". (System variable DIMLAYER)

Undo

It is the last dimension operation is reversed.

 When you position a dimension so that it overlaps another dimension, the following alternatives are shown.

Leave now

It creates a baseline dimension type by combining the previously added and existing dimensions.

Split up

It divides the current dimension into two halves, then organises the two parts into a form of continuous dimension.

Replace

It substitutes the inserted dimension with the one that was previously present.

None

It overlays the new dimension with the current one.
