Difference between ASCII and Unicode

Introduction

In this article, we are going to learn about the differences between ASCII and Unicode. We are going to study briefly about these two topics and study about major differences and their advantages and disadvantages in their respective fields.

Definition of ASCII

ASCII is also known as “askee” code. It is a short form that can be expanded as the “American Standard Code for Information Interchange”. It is a simple idea in which it uses different numbers to represent the text. In the ASCII numbers, letters, symbols collectively called as characters by assigning a number to each character in a piece or a block of text. Each number in the block contains a value in the form of a letter which further forms the words then sentences and paragraphs.

Definition of Unicode

Unicode is used for representing a wide range of characters and symbols. Every character in the Unicode has a value or a character is assigned a code point. The Unicode can also known as universal coded character set.The code point is just a number in the Unicode that is uniquely identified for its values. The Unicode is basically a replacement for ASCII because the standards of the ASCII are limited.

Differences between ASCII and Unicode

ASCII

• ASCII assigns the specific numbers for each of the characters, letters, alphabets, or symbols.
• The characters, letters, alphabets, or symbols can be conversely converted into numbers or can be written in numbers.
• The ASCII is the English language subset of the Unicode that means all of the ASCII codes also exist in the Unicode.
• The ASCII code is used in different platforms.
• ASCII is mainly used in the emails that we send and receive daily.
• ASCII code is also used in programming for computer science.
• ASCII code is used in text files to store the alphabetical data.

• We can use ASCII for calculation on characters. The calculated value is used to convert the lowercase letter to uppercase or uppercase to lowercase.
• The ASCII can only show a maximum of 128 letters.
• The ASCII can only able to process the characters which are in English.

Unicode

• Unicode can handle the large amount of code points than the ASCII.
• The Unicode have two standards which are created by the joint forces of distinct groups.
• The Unicode follows ISO and Unicode consortium.
• There are different languages are included in the Unicode English, Greek, Arabic, Cyrillic, Cherokee.
• The enormous numbers of privately reserved characters are also included in the Unicode.
• The hexadecimal notation is used to represent the code points in the Unicode.
• There are different encoding schemes exists in the Unicode they are utf-8, utf-16 and finally utf-32.

Advantages of ASCII

The ASCII code has lots of advantages. The ASCII stores the letter, Character, Symbol for a different number. The ASCII code uses blocks to store the numbers in the memory locations. The numbers and the characters can be conversely changed that we can get the character using a number and we can also get the number by using the alphabet. This is the main advantage of the ASCII code. The emails contain lot of information which takes lots of data the text data is converted into numbers so that it can easily store in the memory.

Advantages of Unicode

The Unicode have major advantages than the ASCII. The ASCII itself is a subset of the Unicode. The Unicode can handle large amounts of data that it can have many code points. The Unicode can have up to one million code points. The large files are only able to be processed by Unicode. The Unicode uses different encoding schemas that are used in Unicode. They help in increasing the efficiency of the Unicode. The enormous numbers of privately reserved characters can be processed using Unicode. The Unicode have the ability to process the characters of different languages.

The Unicode is capable to process many languages. Both of them have a same function of using the numbers to store the characters. But one can store more and another can only store less in a single block.The Unicode have the advantage over the ASCII depending on different aspects.
