Has and Have: An Introduction

Has and have reflect the present time. It means has and have both is the present form of verb To Have.

The past participle of have is Had.And in the continuous tense, we use as having.

Where we should use Has?

• Has is used with the singular.
• As well as it is used with the third person pronoun.
• The simple way to remember the uses of has is; has is used with the he, she, it and someone’s name.

• Have is used for indicating the plural number.
• Have is used with the first and second person of pronoun.
• It is the present form of 'to have'.

3. I have no idea about this problem.

Uses of Has and Have-

• Expressing Possession:

In English language, for indicating the possession or assert on something, we use has and have. In a sentence, to use has and have indicate a deep possession of something. Here are some examples:

1. I have a luxurious house near the lake.
2. Aisha has no plan for her mother’s birthday.
3. We have delicious ice-cream in the freezer.
4. He still has a year for paying the car loan.
5. You have more than a year to study for the final exams.

1. Indicates Relation:

Has and have also used to describe relations. For example:

1. Rihanna has a younger brother.
2. How many siblings do you have?
3. He has a daughter and two sons.
4. Indicate the strong feelings and thoughts:

These words are also used to describe something experience.

1. I have a great experience in skydiving.
2. He has a strong feeling that something is going to wrong.

Used in Perfect Tense:-

The role of has and have is really vast in English grammar. It is used as a helping verb in Perfect Tenses. In perfect tense has, have and had indicate the completed action and combine that completed action with time (past, present and future tenses).

• Use as an Auxiliary Verb in the Perfect Tenses

In perfect tense, has and have always used as an auxiliary verb with the third form of main verb. Let’s see in detail, how it works:

Present Perfect Tense

In the present perfect has and have used with the third form of verb. Here are few examples:

1. I have done my all pending work.
2. She has waited for three hours in this queue.
3. You have hit me during the match.

Past Perfect Tense

In the past perfect, we use the past participle form of ‘To Have’ which is Had. Had is also used with the third form of verb.

It is most easy to learn because we use had with any subject. Doesn’t matter it is singular or plural, and first, second or third person. Had is used with every person. Examples:

1. You had gone to the part last night. (Second Person)
2. Yesterday, I had done the cleaning of mu house. (First Person)
3. She had learnt an important lesson in the last seminar. (Third Person)

Future Perfect Tense

Future perfect used to combine the one point towards a completed action and other point in the future.

Use of Have

In future perfect we use will have and past participle of the verb. We only use have in this tense.

Will + Have + Past Participle

It does not change whether the subject is singular or plural. Read the following examples:

1. I will have finished my dinner.
2. You will have prepared for the annual exams.
3. It will have stopped snowfall.
4. She will have decorated the room for her sister’s birthday party.
5. To indicating obligation

When has and have used with To, it show more obligation. It means To has or To have is used to indicating some urgency or something required to do.

Structure of sentence:

Has/ Have to + Present Particle (Base form of verb)

For Example:

1. Kevin has to do this work whether he like it or not.
2. There is too rush. We haveto drive slowly.
3. They haveto take participate in the drama.
4. I have to clean my room right now.

Conversely, the structure of sentence has given below for something which is not necessary:

1. I don’t have to learn new language.
2. You don’t have to wear the uniform on weekends.

Use with Modal Verbs

Have is also used with the modal verbs. It is used with should/ would/ could + have + past participle.

• He shouldn’t have drunk so much on the late night party.
• Would Have is used when speaking about conditions of past.
• She would have chase you, but you ran away.

• If my earnings had been enough, I couldhave a house with the garden in backyard.
