Difference between Extender and Repeater
Nowadays, we all use Wi-Fi in our houses and offices. We can easily connect and use the internet without any wire connection between the gadgets and the router. So, the connection distance is limited in the Wi-Fi. To overcome this drawback different gadgets are introduced into the market. The Extender and Repeater helps in overcoming one of the major drawbacks of the wireless connection of the ethernet. So, we are going to learn about the Extender and Repeater. We also going to know the differences between the Extender and Repeater.
Definition
What is Extender?
A Wi-Fi extender is a type of a Wi-Fi booster which extends the signal of the internet to another location from the main router. The Wi-Fi extender is connected to the home network using an Internet cable or a coaxial cable. In simple words, we can say extender acts like another router where the signal strength of the Internet is low in a particular place. The main work of the extender is to extend the coverage of the Wi-Fi signal throughout the place. It does not amplify any signal, but it broadcastsits own signal through the external antennas present in the extender itself.
What is Repeater?
A Wi-Fi repeater is a type of a Wi-Fi booster that expands the range of the Internet signal which is generated from the Wi-Fi router. The main work of the Wi-Fi repeater is to re-broadcast the signal over a large area and helps in connecting to the Wi-Fi from the larger distances. The Wi-Fi repeater does not require any wired connection between the Wi-Fi router and the Wi-Fi repeater. The latency of the Ethernet will present in the usage of a Wi-Fi repeater.
Advantages of Extender
The Wi-Fi extender has got a lot of advantages. With the use of a Wi-Fi extender, we can mainly overcome the major drawback of the broadband connection. the Wi-Fi extender helps a lot in boosting the Wi-Fi signal all over the place. There will be no latency when the Wi-Fi extender is used to boost the Wi-Fi signal. The Wi-Fi extenders are budget friendly. It works mainly in eliminating the Wi-Fi dead zones that are present over a large place.
Advantages of Repeater
The repeater has also got a lot of advantages. The Wi-Fi repeater does not require any physical connection between the Wi-Fi router and the Wi-Fi repeater. The Wi-Fi repeater does not cost as much as a Wi-Fi router. The enhancement of the signal can be done using repeater. The Wi-Fi repeater also provides the extension of length of the signal transmission wirelessly.
Disadvantages of Extender
The Wi-Fi extender cannot be connected to all the Wi-Fi routers. The Wi-Fi extenders face a lot of comparability issues between establishing the connection between the latest Wi-Fi routers. The Wi-Fi extender cannot be used in the places containing large areas and a lot of physical blockers. They also don’t work in the places in which the number of floors is more.
Disadvantages of Repeater
The signal strength of the internet coming from the Wi-Fi router will be decreased a lot by using the repeaters. The bandwidth is decreased nearer to the half of the bandwidth of the Wi-Fi router. The Wi-Fi repeater usually faces a problem of the colliding of the ethernet signals of other routers. When there are a lot of Wi-Fi routers are at a nearer distances the Wi-Fi repeaters does not work because they cannot segregate or differentiate the Wi-Fi band widths of two different Wi-Fi’s.
See the differences between Extender and Repeater in a tabular form:
Extender | Repeater |
It requires the physical connection between the Wi-Fi router and the Wi-Fi extender. | It does not require any physical connection between the Wi-Fi router and the device. |
The signal strength is not decreased using the Wi-Fi extender. | The signal strength of the Wi-Fi router is decreased using the Wi-Fi repeater. |
The Wi-Fi extender is not suitable for the places having a lot of floors and the physical obstacles. | The Wi-Fi repeater is suitable for larger areas with the loss of signal strength. |
The Wi-Fi extender has compatible issues to connect between the latest Wi-Fi routers. | The Wi-Fi repeater does not face any compatible issues to connect between the latest routers. |
The Wi-Fi extender does not face any issue when there are many different Wi-Fi nearer to each other. | The Wi-Fi repeater faces signal collision when there are a lot of Wi-Fi signals nearer to each other. |
The Wi-Fi extender can segregate the different Wi-Fi signals. | The Wi-Fi repeater cannot segregate the different Wi-Fi signals. |
