Difference between AT Motherboard and ATX Motherboard

Motherboard is an important and essential part of a PC. Motherboard plays an important role in the working of a PC. It includes many circuits and slots which contain many different useful items like RAM’s, SSD, HDD and other components can be inserted into the slots. There are many different types of motherboards in the market but in this article, we are going to learn the differences between AT motherboard and an ATX motherboard.

What is AT Motherboard?

AT motherboard is also called Advanced Technology motherboard. The AT motherboards can only fit in AT casing, they cannot fit in the ATX casing. The AT motherboards do not come with sleep mode feature built in. The AT motherboards consume more power when compared to other type of motherboards because there is no sleep feature in it.

What is ATX Motherboard?

ATX motherboards are also called Advanced Technology eXtended Motherboard. The ATX motherboards also do not fit in the AT casing. The ATX motherboards come with the sleep feature inbuilt with in it and it does not consume more power because when there is inactivity the ATX motherboards go into the sleep mode automatically.

Advantages of AT Motherboards

  • The AT motherboards considerably had less advantages because of their architecture.
  • The AT motherboards have considered of having more options or connecters when they are first started by the company.
  • The AT motherboards brought a significant change in the motherboard industry.

Advantages of ATX Motherboards

  • The ATX motherboards are one of the latest motherboards.
  • Due to their architecture, they made a significant change in the motherboard industry because of their slots, connectors and ports.
  • The availability of more ports helps the users in upgrading their computers. The architecture of the ATX motherboards brings lots of plus points to the motherboard users.
  • The ATX motherboards are more reliable.
  • The ATX motherboards can be compatible of two graphic cards.
  • The user can fit in up to two graphic cards at a time. Due to more connectors the user can use dual channel ram and make their computer faster and more efficient.
  • The ATX motherboards save lots of space because they are small. They make the size of the CPU smaller.

Disadvantages of AT Motherboard

  • The AT motherboards have lots of disadvantages.
  • The problems of the AT motherboards mainly arises due to their architecture.
  •  The AT motherboards have very less number of slots which makes it hard to upgrade.
  • The AT motherboards have large surface area.
  • The AT motherboards increases the size of the CPUs.
  •  The AT motherboard does not have a feature that it cannot disable or turn off the computer on its own.
  • The AT motherboards are less reliable.

Disadvantages of AT Motherboard

  • The ATX motherboards had got very less disadvantages.
  •  The ATX motherboards are very expensive when compared to the AT motherboards.
  •  The smaller version of ATX or Micro ATX motherboards got some disadvantages they got very less ram slots when compared to standard ATX.

The AT motherboards does not contain the feature that it can't disable or switch off the computer or PC on its own.  The ATX motherboard architecture is more suitable and convenient because of its size and the number of slots present in it.
The AT motherboards are lot older in design.The ATX motherboards how advanced architecture that it can switch off the computer on its own.
