Difference between EBS and EFS
The Amazon web service provides a storage management system. There are two types of the storage management system. These are AWS EFS (Elastic File System) and AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage). In this topic, we are going to discuss the difference between AWS EFS (Elastic File System) and AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage).
What is AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage)?
AWS EBS means Amazon web service Elastic Block Storage. It is a storage service which is provided by Amazon. The primary purpose behind the design of AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is to separate the EC2 instance. EC2 is a type of service that provides the assistance of a selection of optimized instance types, which is also designed by Amazon. The AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is directly attached to the instances; that's why the performance of AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is very high. The AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is used in various types of databases, like a rational and non-rational database. AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is also used in various fields of software testing. AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) stores the maximum data in the form of blocks. These blocks are present in different hard drives. This type of storage cannot be accessed directly from the internet. We can connect the AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) as we attached and detached the hard drives to our computer.
What is AWS EFS (Elastic File System)?
AWS EFS means Amazon web service Elastic File System. The AWS EFS (Elastic File System) provides the support of sharing the files electrically. AWS EFS (Elastic File System) has more storage, and that storage is accessed by many servers at the same time. The service of AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is fully managed by Amazon. The scalability feature is also provided by Amazon to AWS EFS (Elastic File System). That means the increase or decrease in workload cannot affect the AWS EFS (Elastic File System). If the workload suddenly increases or decreases the workload, then the AWS EFS (Elastic File System) automatically scales and manages itself. The advantage of AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is that it is a cost benefit to the company due to its scalability features. The rate of IOPS in AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is inversely proportional to the quantity of data.
Comparison between AWS EFS (Elastic File System) and AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) based on characteristics
1. Based on the type of storage
AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is file-level storage where as AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is block-level storage.
2. Based on Availability
AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is a highly available and durable storage service, whereas AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is a lower available and stable storage service.
3. Based on Durability
AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is highly durable in nature in comparison to AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage).
4. Based on performance
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) has increased in performance in comparison with AWS EFS (Elastic File System).
5. Based on the storage capacity of data
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) has the same ability to store the data. In the case of AWS EFS (Elastic File System) has the same region to store the data.
6. Based on the comprehensive management of service
AWS EFS (Elastic File System) is very much complicated to manage service in comparison to AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage).
7. Based on data access
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) cannot access the data directly, whereas AWS EFS (Elastic File System) accesses the information directly from the internet.
8. Based on encryption
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) used AWS KMS–Managed Customer Master Key (CMK) for encryption, whereas AWS EFS (Elastic File System) uses AES 256-bit Encryption standards for encryption.
9. Based on limitation of file
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) has no limit to storing the file, whereas AWS EFS (Elastic File System) has limited storage.
10. Based on cost saving
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is costly compared to AWS E.FS (Elastic File System).
The differences in AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) and AWS EFS (Elastic File System) tabular form -
AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage) | AWS EFS (Elastic File System) |
EBS means Amazon Elastic Block Store | EFS means, Amazon Elastic File System. |
It provides block-level storage. | It provides file-level storage. |
In AWS EBS (Elastic Block Storage), the data should be quickly accessible and have long durability. | It uses for the development of the modern application. |
It is suitable for both types of database-style applications -: 1. For random reads 2. For random writes. | It is used in industries for development purpose. |
