Difference between Antibiotics and Vaccine

Germs have always been a harsh deadly reality we often ignore. The recent example is Covid. It has turned our lives upside down.

Daily usage of antibiotics worldwide has resulted in the selection for multidrug-resistant microbes. Both individually are a part of finishing a lot of diseases around us. But how do they differ from each other? Let’s discuss in detail.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are medicines that help us fight the harmful chemicals and diseases in humans and animals.

People prefer taking antibiotics in different ways:

• Orally (by mouth) - Pills, capsules, tablets, liquids.
• Through an injection (preferred in more serious situations).
• Topically - cream, spray or ointment to apply on different parts of your body.

What kind of infections is treated by antibiotics?

Antibiotic medicines fight bacterial infections such as, strep throats, urinary infections etc.

Although some infections don’t require antibiotics because of how minor they are. Taking antibiotics for minor infections can have its own side effects. So make sure to get a prescription before taking anything.

Viral Infections

Antibiotics do not help control viral infections. Like in case of colds and flu’s antibiotics won’t work.

Side effects of Antibiotics

Consumption of Antibiotics if not prescribed by a professional can cause some severe damage. Listed below are a few side effects of the same:

Why is it important to take prescribed antibiotics?

Antibiotics are usually taken to control/kill the bacteria. But if not taken under the right guidance can cause the bacteria to grow.

• Don’t take medicines unnecessarily.

Vaccines

A vaccine is a biological mixture/preparation by scientists to provide immunity to handle a particular disease. It contains chemicals extracted from a dead disease or microbe, in order to treat the active disease.

The current vaccines available can cure 25 different infections.

For example: for the past 2 years we have been suffering due to covid pandemic. No cure came to mind. And after so many lives lost, some of our much honored professionals were able to cure Corona patients through vaccines.

Edward Jenner, developed the term vaccine and was the first person to create vaccine by his own in 1798 in which he described the protection of smallpox through cowpox.

How do vaccines control infections?

Vaccines can fight both bacteria and Viruses. When you get vaccinated, your body knows well in advance what it is dealing with and gives your body a heads-up.

It helps in developing the core of your immune system so that it can handle any harmful virus that may occur in future.

Vaccines are so strong that if taken when body is healthy and in good shape can work wonders but at the same time have some side effects.

• Laziness
• Dizzy feeling

Antibiotics and Vaccines in regards to covid-19

As you know we have been troubled by Corona since two years, and now we finally have vaccines available in our country. People have been running back and forth for their slots. If you want to get your first or second dose done and you already are on some antibiotics for another bacteria, there is absolutely no harm in taking both together.

The differences between antibiotics and vaccine are as follows:

7. Chance of bacterial resistance, not environmentally safe.	Does not include bacterial resistance and is environment friendly.
8. Transient reduction of pathogen only during treatment period.	Immunity reduces pathogen pressure overtime.

To sum it up:

• Antibiotic resistance is a worldwide problem to the extent that there is a huge risk that infections can soon become untreatable and lead to death. On the other hand, vaccines are made to protect us from deadly diseases.
• Vaccines helps to avoid any infections to harm you whereas antibiotics try to kill those bacterial infections already harming you.

NOTE: Since they both work differently, there is no harm in using them at the same time.
