Ternary Operators in C

What are Ternary Operators? 

Ternary operators are conditional operators in programming languages that take three operands. They are also referred to as conditional expressions because they evaluate a condition and return one of two values based on the result of the condition.

The ternary operator's syntax is as follows:

condition ? expression1 : expression2

Here, ‘condition’ is the situation that is to be evaluated. If the condition is met, ‘expression1’ is evaluated and returned as the operation's result. If the condition is false, the operation evaluates ‘expression2’ and returns the result.

Consider the following code as an example:

int p = 10, q = 5;
int z = (p > q) ? p : q;
printf("The maximum value is %d", r);

In the above example, the ternary operator “(p > q) ? p : q” checks if ‘p’ is greater than ‘q’. If it's true, the value of ‘p’ is assigned to ‘r’, else the value of ‘q’ is assigned to ‘r’.

In this case, since ‘p’ is greater than ‘q’, the value of ‘r’ will be 10.

Now, let's compare this with the equivalent if-else statement:

The outcome is the same as in the example code for the ternary operator.

Both the ternary operator and the if-else statement can be used to achieve the same result. Still, the ternary operator is more concise and easier to read. However, it's important to note that if-else statements are more flexible and can handle more complex conditions, whereas ternary operators are best suited for simple conditions.

Advantages of Using Ternary Operators

There are several advantages of using ternary operators in programming languages like C:
