Mary Kom - Biography

Early life:

MC Mary Kom (Mangte Changneijang Mary Kom) was born in the Manipur district of Churachandpur on March 1, 1983. Her father worked as a subsistence farmer. She received his early schooling at St. Xavier's School and Loktak Christian Model School (up to class 6) (up to class 8). She then enrolled at Adimjati High School in Imphal to study for grades 9 and 10 but failed the matriculation exam. She had no intention of retaking the matriculation exams, so she dropped out and went to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in Imphal to continue her education. Churachandpur College was where she finished her studies. She had always enjoyed athletics, and the achievement of her home state's boxer Dingko Singh fuelled her desire to compete. She began her training in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, under the direction of Manipur State boxing instructor Amarjit Singh.

Because Mary Kom's family was poor, higher education was not her option. Even though her family tutored her and completed her early education at Manipur's Loktak Christian Model School, Mary Kom struggled academically. Nonetheless, she enrolled in Imphal's Adimjati School for additional study, failing the entrance exam and dropping out. She went to the National Institute of Open School to finish her high school education. Women did not have as much economic and social autonomy as now. Mary Kom's family's financial situation was also poor, so they had no choice but to work together.

Mary Kom is the only female boxer to win a medal in her six world championships, aside from the National Boxing Championships. Mary has won five gold and one silver medal in the Asian Women's Boxing Championship and five gold and one silver medal in the Women's World Adult Boxing Championship. By capturing a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, she brought dignity to her country. Mary has also won gold medals at the Asian Boxing Championships and the Indoor Asian Games.

Mary made Asian Games history when she won gold in Incheon, South Korea, on October 1, 2014. Mary Kom has won 10 national titles since winning the National Women's Boxing Championship for the first time in 2001. The Indian government awarded Mary the Arjuna Award in 2003 for her contributions to boxing. In 2006, she received the Padma Shri and, in 2009, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the country's highest sporting award.

 After a one-year break, she returned in 2008 to win silver at the 'Asian Women Boxing Championship' in India. In addition, she won the AIBA Women's Boxing Championship China gold medal.

Mary won the gold medal in the 2010 Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan and the AIBA Women's Boxing Championship for the fifth time. Mary took the bronze medal in the Asian Games in the 51 kg weight class the following year. In 2010, the Commonwealth Games were held in India, and Mary Kom appeared in the opening ceremony alongside Vijender Singh.

In 2011 she won the gold medal in the 48 kg weight class at China's 'Asian Women's Cup.'

Mongolia won the gold medal in the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in the 51 kg weight class in 2012. Mary placed third in the 51 kg weight class.
