Controversies
Money Laundering Case Against Sukesh
The Enforcement Directorate questioned her on a money laundering case involving more than Rs 200 crore brought against Sukesh Chandrashekar on October 20, 2021, when she appeared before them. The actress had missed at least three summonses earlier. At the Mumbai airport on December 5, 2021, she was halted by ED representatives as she was on enroute to Dubai for a performance. She was detained for questioning after the ED issued a LOC against her concerning the Sukesh Chandrashekar case, in which she had made allegations about purported financial activities. According to allegations about the suspected conman, she received a horse worth Rs. 52 lakhs and a Persian cat worth Rs. 9 lakhs. Sukesh reportedly gave her gifts totaling Rs. 10 crores.
According to the charge sheet submitted by the ED, Jacqueline expressed little interest in speaking with Sukesh, so he contacted her from the home ministry, which Amit Shah runs, and pretended to be a senior member of the ministry. Sukesh reportedly employed this strategy after Fernandez refused to speak with him when he attempted to get in touch with her through her makeup artist. The ED asserted that during a "spoof call" to the actress, Sukesh pretended to be a "very important person in the Government" and that he also identified himself as the proprietor of Sun TV and a member of Jayalalithaa's political party.
Sukesh was in touch with the actress right up until the day of his arrest. During that time, he allegedly "offered her and her family members several gifts, organized chartered flights for her to fly within India and her hotel stay, made payments in cash to a scriptwriter on behalf of Jacqueline. Sukesh Chandrashekhar funded all these costs and payments with income from the crime he had amassed through scheduled offense-related criminal activity. Jacqueline Fernandez admitted to "receiving gifts" when the ED questioned her, including three Gucci and Chanel designer bags, two Gucci workout outfits, a pair of Louis Vuitton shoes, two pairs of diamond earrings, a bracelet comprised of multicolored stones, and two Hermes bracelets. A Mini Cooper was also given to her, which she later returned.
