Draupadi Murmu - Biography
Draupadi Murmu is currently flashing on every news channel and the internet. She is an Indian politician from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). Currently, BJP has nominated her name for the presidential election of 2022. She is from Odisha and was the first woman to be the governor of Odisha and served from 2015 to 2021. She is the first to complete a five-year term as a governor in Jharkhand and the first tribal to be nominated for the post of President of India.
The president is regarded as the head of the Executive and the first citizen of India. President is appointed for a five renewable year term. The President is indirectly elected by voting. Both the houses of the Indian parliament actively take part in presidential polling. At present, the President’s office is held by Ram Nath Kovind and he will retire on 24th July.
Draupadi Murmu Early Life
Draupadi Murmu was born on 20th June 1958 in Baidaposi. Baidaposi is a village in the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. She is the daughter of Lt. Biranchi Narayan Tudu. Her father and grandfather were a member of the Panchayati Raj System in the village. She was married to Lt. Shyam Charan Murmu. They had two sons but unfortunately, both of them died. She now only has a daughter and her name is Itishri Murmu.
Draupadi Murmu Educational Qualification
Draupadi Murmu holds a degree in Bachelor of Arts from Rama Devi Women’s College in Odisha. After completing her studies she worked as a teacher for a few years. She was an honorary assistant professor at Shri Aurobindo Integral and Education and Research, Rairangpur. She also worked as a junior assistant in the irrigation department. Finally, in the year 1997, she joined Bhartiya Janta Party.
Political Career of Draupadi Murmu
In 1997 Draupadi Murmu was elected as the councilor of Rairangpur district in Odisha and she was made the vice-chairperson of the district in the same year.
In the 2002 assembly election, Draupadi Murmu was given control of the Department of Transport and Commerce 2002. She was also given the department of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry by the government of Odisha and she served this post until 2004. She remained the district President of Mayurbhanj from 2002 to 2009.
In 2004, Draupadi Murmu was elected as MLA from Rairangpur and served the post till 2009. BJP made her the state President of Schedule Tribe Morcha of Odisha in 2006.
In 2010 she was again the district President for Mayurbhanj. She was elected for the same post in 2013 for the third time and served till April 2015. And in 2015 only she was elected for the governor’s post of Jharkhand.
Draupadi Murmu was elected as MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) twice in Odisha on a BJP ticket. She was also the cabinet minister when Navin Patnayak was in government. Navin Patnayak was then the cheif minister of Odisha and his government was formed by the alliance of Biju Janta Dal and Bhartiya Janta Party.
Odisha Legislative Assembly awarded Draupadi Murmu with Neelkanth Award for best MLA. Draupadi Murmu fought against every obstacle to be a good politician and a good human being. She has worked for more than twenty years for tribal upliftment and is regarded as the biggest tribal face of the BJP at present time.
Draupadi Murmu as Governor of Jharkhand
Draupadi Murmu was the first woman to become the governor of Jharkhand. Her term of office was for 6 years 1 month and 18 days. During this time she always held herself out from the political debates. During her tenure as a Chancellor, Draupadi Murmu started an online portal for the universities of Jharkhand. Through this online portal, all the colleges under the universities could start a simultaneous enrollment of candidates.
This was something new and the first effort which helped students and universities. She even took some bold decisions to return the bills stated by the state governments. When Raghuvar Das was in government from BJP's side, she took a tough step and returned several bills including CNT-SPT Amendment Bill. When Hemant Soren was in government at that time also Draupadi Murmu returned the file with many obligations and the file was related to Tribal Consultative Committee.
How Draupadi Murmu Felt After Being Nominated
After the nomination, Draupadi Murmu was interviewed where she expressed her joy and how she feels. She told that it was very surprising for her and she can’t believe it. She is very grateful to all the people who supported her. She promises that she will full fill her duty in an unbiased way. She also asked all the states to support her in the Presidential Election.
Yashwant Sinha is Oppositions Nominee
Yashwant Sinha is an Indian Politician who served in Ministry o Finance from 1990 to 1991 and 1998 to 2002. He also served at the Ministry of External Affairs from 2002 to 2004. Before he left BJP, he was a senior leader of it. He joined TMC to fight against BJP and he has become the first Trinamool Congress leader to be nominated for the President.
Feeling of Odisha Government
After the announcement, Draupadi Murmu first appealed to BJD (Biju Janta Dal) for support. As Draupadi Murmu is from Odisha it will be interesting to know whether the state government favors her or not. Navin Patnaik said that having her as NDA’s presidential candidate is a proud moment for the state.
Few Things to Know about Draupadi Murmu’s Presidential Election
i.) If Draupadi Murmu is elected then she will be the second female President of India.
ii.) She was also a contender for President’s post five years ago when Pranav Mukherjee was about to leave Rashtrapati Bhavan.
iii.) Her expected win as a President is 48% and if this happens then it will be a boost for BJP from tribal.
iv.) Yashwant Sinha is the opposition candidate from TMC for the 2022 Presidential Election. So it’s going to very interesting competition between a former IAS and a tribal woman.
