Early Life

Ruskin Bond was born in Kasauli, British India, to parents Edith Clarke and Aubrey Alexander Bond. When Ruskin's father joined the Royal Air Force in 1939, the family went to Dehradun. Ruskin, his father, mother, sister, and maternal grandmother lived together. Ruskin and his sister Ellen were raised in Jamnagar Palace until Ruskin was six years old, during which those period, their father emphasized to them the importance of English.

Bond's parents were divorced when he was eight years old, and his mother married a Punjabi Hindu, Hari. Ruskin's father paid the cost of his transportation to New Delhi, where he did his initial schooling. He shared a deep bond with his father and considered those moments spent with him to be one of the most satisfying. He was soon transferred to a residential school in Mussoorie.

Ruskin's father died in battle at that time, and he was only ten years old. Ruskin was at his Shimla boarding school when his lecturer told him about this incident. He was feeling sad about his father being killed. Later, he was grown in Dehradun with his mother and stepfather.

He received his education at Shimla's Bishop Cotton School, and he received the Hailey Literature Prize and the Irwin Divinity Prize. In his 16 years, Untouchable is one of best earliest short works he created in 1951.

For several years, he worked as a freelancer in Delhi and Dehradun. He made himself financially sound by contributing short tales and poetry to newspapers and publications. Once, he reflected on his youth, saying, "I was occasionally fortunate as those opportunity [job] was accepted, and I could get a few hundred rupees.

In 1963, Because editors and publishers were close to Mussoorie, he connected to the editors and publishers there and enjoyed the area. For four years, he was the editor of a magazine. Penguin(a British publishing house) had a presence in India in the 1980s and contacted him to write some novels.

He has worked as a freelance writer and lived with his adoptive family in Landour, Mussoorie's Ivy Cottage. He also decided to live there since 1980. Ellen, his sister, resided with his stepsister in Ludhiana till she died in 2014. He also has a Canadian sibling named William.
