Rohit Sharma's batting performance surprised several coaches. He was chosen to represent the West Zone against the Central Zone in the 2005 Deodhar Trophy. But, he didn't perform well in that match. After that, he scored an unbroken 142 vs. the North Zone. After these innings, he became a subject of debate and was inserted into a list of 30 possible Champions Trophy players.

The NKP (Narendra Kumar Prasadrao Salve) also selected him for the Salve Trophy. He was selected in India's A team for the 2006 match against New Zealand due to his regular performances. He also got a chance to play in the Ranji Trophy in the same year.

He scored sequential double century and half-centuries against Gujarat and Bengal during his early career. This conditioned the selecting committee to pay close attention once again. Rohit was appointed to the leadership of the Mumbai Ranji squad due to his continuous strong performance. Because of his regularly strong performances in domestic cricket events, the selection committee chose him to participate in the match between India and Ireland. Still, Rohit did not get the opportunity to play in the Belfast (venue() match.

In a T20 match in September 2007, Rohit scored 50 against South Africa's fast bowling. In the same game, he performed admirably on the field.
