Neena Gupta: Biography, Husband, Vivian Richards, Daughter

Neena Gupta is an actress, director, and producer who has won multiple awards for her work in both film and television. She rose to fame due to her risk-taking roles and stellar performance. She established her acting career with the films "Who Chokri" and "Badhaai Ho." She has contributed to several well-known movies.

She also played characters in foreign films such as In Custody, Gandhi, Cotton Mary, and Deceivers. The audience remembers her best for the dance routine "Choli Ke Peeche" she performed with Madhuri Dixit. She was regarded as one of the top actors at the beginning of the 1980s. She collaborated with Penguin Random House India to publish her autobiography in 2021 under the working title "Sach Kahun Toh."

Early years

Her birthplace was Kolkata. She is a hybrid of Punjabi and Baniya culture because her mother is from Punjab and her father is from the Baniya community. Despite being from Kolkata, where she was born, she was reared in Delhi's Karol Bagh neighborhood. The oldest of the other four siblings is Neena Gupta. Her father has two sons from a second marriage. She thus had four siblings.

Background

The Father of Neena Gupta was employed at Indian State Trading Corporation Limited. Her mother is a double master's degree holder in Sanskrit and Political science. She had a sibling who was a Chartered Accountant (CA).

Education

Reports claim that despite her mother's wishes, Neena Gupta chose to pursue a career in film instead of becoming an IAS official. Before attending Vidya Bhavan for her senior education, Neena Gupta attended Bal Bharti School for her preschool years. She decided to major in arts for her undergraduate degree at Janki Devi Mahavidyalaya before pursuing her master's degree in the same field at Delhi University. Sanskrit was her master's language choice.

Her mother is a Sanskrit master's degree holder as well. After that, she decided to write her thesis and earned her MPhil from Delhi University. She focused on "Stage Techniques in Sanskrit Drama" for her thesis. This makes it clear how interested she is in cinema. She interrupted her research since she and her mentor had different points of view.

Her passion for film

Neena Gupta graduated in 1980 and finished first in her class. She was friends with actor and director Satish Kaushik while she was a student at Delhi University. With Sathish Kaushik's assistance, she enrolled in the National School of Drama (NSD) in 1977. After completing her schooling quickly and with little interruption, she was allowed to appear in the movie "Mahatma Gandhi."

In one of her interviews, Neena Gupta acknowledged that when she first entered the movie industry alone, she had made several mistakes. She continued by saying that her films represent her powerful personality, which is how she landed her parts.

Private Life

First, Neena Gupta wed Amlan Kusum Ghose. When she was sixteen, she was married. He was an IIT-Delhi graduate. Amlan married Neena Gupta while still a student. However, after a year of marriage, they separated for other personal reasons. She then became engaged to Shaarangdev, the son of renowned vocalist Pandit Jasraj. She later became engaged to the then-cricketer Vivian Richards. Masaba Gupta, a well-known fashion designer, was born in 1980, the daughter of Vivian Richards and Neena Gupta. Without getting married, Richards gave birth to Masaba.

When Vivian Richards first met Neena Gupta, he was already married. Neena Gupta hails from a normal Indian family; therefore, when Gupta and Richards decided to divorce, it was difficult for her to face the family and raise Masaba on her alone. Their relationship did not work out either, so she raised Masaba alone. After that, she married chartered accountant Vivek Mehra. In a secret ceremony, she wed him in the United States.

She was raised a Hindu and practices Hinduism. Speaking of her eating habits, she revealed in an interview that she is a vegetarian and likes Rajma Chawal. She admires Lata Mangeshkar, and Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna are her favorite actors. Her nationality is Indian because she was raised in India, and her zodiac sign is Gemini. She is 63 years old right now. She appears to enjoy reading and traveling.

In 1982, Neena Gupta appeared in six different movies, with Gandhi being one of them. Farooq Shaikh and Deepti Naval played the primary roles in her first film debut, "Saath Saath," which was helmed by Raman Kumar. She reportedly received 10,000 rupees for her 1982 film "Gandhi," according to rumors. In contrast to Gupta, who appeared in the Malayalam films "Aham" in 1992 and "Vasthuhara" in 1991, she is a multilingual actor. In 1982, Dilip Dhawan produced a movie. She appeared in "Mandi" and "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron" in 1983, both of which were released. She served as the secretary in both films. She has appeared in numerous films since 1984. Her movies from 1982 to 1992 are listed in a rather extensive list.

Her film career began with the release of "Gandhi." She performed "The Deceivers" in 1988, then "Mirza Ghalib" in 1989. Neena Gupta took a vacation for three years after it before returning in 1993. In the 1993 movie "Khalnayak," Madhuri Dixit and Gupta shared the screen.

Following that, Neena Gupta showcased her acting skills in the movie "Mandi." She performed "Rihaee" in 1988, followed by "Drishti" in 1990. She returned to the stage in "Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda" after a two-year hiatus. She became well-known by giving performances on par with the public personas of the biggest artists, like Dimple Kapadia, Rekha, and Shabana Azmi. Unfortunately, she frequently received bold characters because of her misperception of her real-life character. She had never before in her career received drama-based parts as a result. Like other performers, she eventually experienced a terrible period during which she had no suitable roles.

She then took a risk, writing on Instagram, one of the social media platforms, saying she was looking for good jobs to perform, unlike other performers. Later, she received offers. "Badhaai Ho" was one of the offers. She received the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Actress from reviewers for her performance as Ayushmann Khurana's expectant mother in this comedy-drama. She also received a letter of appreciation from the more famous actor "Amitabh Bachchan" for her work in "Badhaai Ho" She launched the hit record "Go To Court," which ultimately failed miserably.

Beginning With Television

In 1985, the television series "Khandaan" marked Neena Gupta's debut. From 1985 to 1987, she performed three serials in a row. She later performed in "Shyam Benegal's Bharat Ek Khoj" and "Dard" in 1994. The Weakest Link, a well-liked remake series, was also hosted by Gupta. She became well-known because of "Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin." She served as the director of some successful serials. She was the director of Saans, Siski, and Kyun Hai Pyar.

After that, she appeared in the films "Ladies Special" and "Dil Se Diya Vachan." Sahaj Productions is the name of the production company she owns. Rajendra Gupta, who is also an actor, is linked to it. The drama "Soorya Ki Antim Kiran Se Soorya Ki Paheli Kiran Tak" was created by Sahaj Productions. In addition, Neena Gupta performed in that drama. Later, she performed in the Zee TV series "Rishtey," which aired from 1998 to 2001 for three years.
