Through IPL auctions, Mumbai Indians paid him three and a half crores. He performed effectively in the game, leading the IPL auction to select him for eight crores.

Even if he gave the team some good contributions a few seasons later, he required chances—which were few—to make an impact.

Surya Kumar Yadav was selected to start at bat in the 2018 IPL. Later, he committed himself to the Mumbai Indians once more. Surya Kumar ultimately led Mumbai in runs scored for the whole IPL season. He struck out 133.33 times for an astonishing 512 runs scored, averaging 36.57 runs per game. He was most notable for his persistence, even when the franchise's campaign was unpleasant.

In his first game for his country, he played well enough to score 50 points. The following day, it was announced that he had been included in the ODI team for the match against England. Surya Kumar Yadav's game-changing heroics at No. 3 earned him the nickname "X Factor" from the India team captain.

On July 18, 2021, he played in his debut One Day International (ODI) match for India against Sri Lanka. Surya Kumar Yadav scored his first fifty in an ODI game against Sri Lanka on July 21, 2021.
