His great love and most significant interest are cricket. He is also well-known for being married to Shilpa Shetty, a stunning Bollywood actress. He is famous for having links to several controversial business operations.

He received criticism for his participation in a business deal that was partially unlawful. He is regarded as a highly successful businessman who can use everything, including items that other people may consider garbage. Because of this, he could make money by purchasing property and apartments and then selling them for more.

Kundra served as the company's chief executive officer (CEO) as of 2009. The media has described this organization as "a worldwide commercial corporation with a base in Dubai. This company's main activities are in metals, building, mining, and green sustainable energy initiatives."

Family

Raj Kundra's parents relocated from their old home of Ludhiana, Punjab, to London, United Kingdom, to make a livelihood, and as a result, Raj Kundra's family is of Indian heritage (Punjabi Hindu Community).

His parents' names are Usha Rani Kundra and Balkrishna Kundra, and he has two sisters or siblings named Reena Kundra and Renu Bakshi. According to reports, he has one brother named Kenrin, who currently lives in the UK.

His mom worked as a store assistant and spent long hours with his father to help the family make a better life in the early days after moving to London. His father finally launched a small company with the money he had saved and bought a post office there.

Early Life

In the early years, Raj Kundra was raised entirely in London, where he was born and educated in a lower-middle-class household. As a child, he saw his family struggle with poverty. He had his early education in a London school, and at 18, his father gave him a choice to either achieve a higher degree or work for the family business.

Because Kundra spent most of his childhood in poverty, he hesitated to join the family company and instead chose to launch his diamond business in Dubai. But once his plan flopped, he decided to investigate for business in Nepal, where he found Pashmina shawls for sale at low prices.

He ultimately spent $100 on 100 shawls before returning to London and selling them to a British clothing manufacturer. The pashmina shawl quickly gained popularity in the UK, and this one did well in trade.

According to the UK magazine Success, the idea of reselling Shawls was so successful that he made a profit of more than 20 million euros, ranking him 198th among the wealthiest British Asians in 2004.

Married Life

Kavita Kundra, the daughter of an Indian British trader, was Kundra's first wife. Before getting married in 2003, they dated for a few years. Kundra and Kavita have a daughter named Deleena.

After barely two years of marriage, Raj and Kavita started to have marital issues, and by 2006, when their daughter Deleena was just two months old, they had separated.

Shilpa Shetty's Relationships and Married Life

Raj was already married to Kavita when he reportedly had an affair with Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty. In 2007, Raj and Shilpa first met in London for a business meeting.

Raj was working with Shilpa to promote their perfume label, S2. Shilpa had previously gained recognition in the UK as the reality television competition Celebrity Big Brother winner.

After that, Shilpa travelled to London frequently for work, where the two would discuss business. In addition, as time passed, Shilpa and Raj started spending more time together.

Shilpa was in London for the Big Brother UK filming when Raj got down on one knee and proposed to her at the Yorkshire IIFA in a pretty romantic way. Raj then bought a unit on the seventh floor of a Mumbai apartment building across from Jalsa (Amitabh Bachchan's home), so he could live with Shilpa. They were married on November 22, 2009, in a farmhouse near Khandala that belonged to Shilpa's close friend.

Raj Kundra

After three years of marriage to Kundra, Shilpa gave birth to her first child on May 21, 2012, in Mumbai. The boy was given the name Viaan.

After waiting almost eight years after the birth of their son, Shilpa and Raj decided to use surrogacy to have their second baby after she had a few miscarriages. The couple then welcomed a baby girl into their lives through surrogacy on February 15, 2020, and called her Samisha.

Business Ventures and Investments

He had already accomplished a lot with his innovative vision at 29. After his early setbacks, Kundra never looked back and made investments in various sectors, notably real estate, steel scrap, cricket, gaming, and film.

To invest in and purchase the Rajasthan Royals Cricket Team of the IPL in 2009, Kundra and his second wife, Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, used an international company with its headquarters in Mauritius.

The couple aimed to improve the team's profile through marketing and media exposure and securing sponsors by using Shetty's status as an "international brand" and his identity. However, Indian government agencies questioned the investment's validity.

In 2012, Raj Kundra and actor Sanjay Dutt established India's first mixed martial arts fighting league. The business, however, had to shut down in 2013 due to legal complications.

One of the founders of Best Deal TV, an Indian tv station for home shopping that profited from paid advertising and debuted in 2015, was Kundra.

Two enterprises, one in stock trading and the other in online poker, had to be shut down by Kundra. But in December 2016, he was forced to shut down his online poker operation as it became clear that his claims that people like Shane Warne and Shahid Kapoor supported it were false.

Raj Kundra has also worked at several other companies, including GroupCo Developers, an Indian real estate developer with offices in eight different cities; iconic Investments, a purported private fund trading in the financial markets, Ashwini Steel, which supposedly produced mild steel from waste, TMT Global, which attempted to anticipate stock prices, and Essential Sports and Media, which was involved in manufacturing and supplying products unrelated to sports.

Gold Gate Trading, which marketed itself as a trading and investment company based in Dubai, was one of his other businesses.

Controversies

Raj Kundra is one of those people whose life has been clouded by controversy, yet his journey from being a son of a bus conductor to being a millionaire is fascinating. Because there is always another side to every story, we will be aware of his significant controversies.

  1. Betting Scandal - Raj Kundra, who married Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty in 2009 and had economic links with her by co-owning the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, became the focus of headlines for the majority of Indian media. In this case, the issue with his controversy is the debate surrounding gambling.

He was permanently barred from playing cricket after being found guilty of betting on it. Co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, Raj Kundra, was questioned by Delhi Police in 2013 after being charged with betting on cricket games. Later, Raj Kundra acknowledged placing bets on cricket games while the inquiry was ongoing, but he claimed he did it through a bookie and another business partner, Umesh Goenka.

However, Kundra told the investigators that he had not fixed the matches. Kundra and Gurunath Meiyappan, the son of former ICC president N. Srinivasan, was convicted in this case. Kundra was given a clean bill of health in this case, though, when he petitioned the Supreme Court in 2018.
  2. Cheating Textile Company - In 2017, he was involved in another issue after being charged with defrauding the textile industry of 24 lakh rupees. Under IPC sections 406, which deals with criminal breach of trust, and 420, which deals with cheating, an FIR was filed in the Bhiwandi police station against both Shilpa and Raj.

The business owner "Big Deals" claimed that although they used television commercials to sell bedsheets, they did not (allegedly) provide Malotia Textiles with the proceeds from the sales.
  3. Bitcoin fraud:  After the fraud of 2017, another one appeared in 2018, just as Bitcoin became more popular in India. Kundra may have participated in the Bitcoin fraud, too. The Pune criminal department claims several Bollywood actors were promoting an evil Bitcoin investment plan.

A sizable quantity of money was found as the police clamped down on the network. It is said that almost 2000 crore rupees had been recovered. The Enforcement Directorate detained GainBitcoin's founder and director, Amit Bhardwaj, on suspicion of cheating investors of Rs 2,000 crore.

Bhardwaj is charged with scamming 8,000 investors by promising significant profits on bitcoin investments. Kundra was also called into the ED's office, where he was questioned about the alleged ties between Amit Bhardwaj, the case's claimed chief accused, and his businesses.
  4. Accusations by ex-wife - Kavita Kundra, Raj's ex-wife, blamed Shilpa for damaging their marriage in her discussion with a major newspaper when Kundra and Shilpa's romance was making the rounds and he was having a difficult time in his first marriage.

Shilpa had to publicly clarify that she had no involvement in Kavita and Raj's divorce after being upset by Kavita's remarks and accusations against her. She said it had only been three months since she spoke with Kundra for professional reasons.

Raj Kundra then claimed that all of Kavita's accusations against Shilpa were false and that Kavita had invented them with the help of money in a chat with an entertainment portal. He continued by alleging that Kavita, his ex-wife, used to have an affair with his ex-brother-in-law.
  5. Kundra's pornographic Controversies: Kundra's recent incident has even put Shilpa and her family in a bind, with allegations that she helped create pornographic content. On July 19, 2021, Raj Kundra was one of 12 people held by the Mumbai Crime Branch Police on suspicion of making pornographic videos and distributing them via websites and apps.

According to the Mumbai Police, Kundra and his brother used to run the adult entertainment company Kenrin. He is regarded as the "mastermind" of the entire unlawful business that was taking place. Additionally, he is said to have invested between 8 and 10 crores of rupees in the pornographic industry.

A small island off the coast of Mumbai served as the location for the entire production, which was then sent to the UK. According to reports, Kundra used to earn between Rs. 6 and 10 lakh daily from selling pornographic content on his app.

The IT Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act were two IPC provisions under which he was accused. However, Kundra claimed that the police had drawn him into the situation and that he had been falsely implicated. He further claimed that his identity was not even listed in the FIR. When a magistrate court granted Kundra bail in September, he was released from Mumbai's Arthur Road prison.

Net Worth and Properties owned

Several media outlets have estimated Raj Kundra's net worth to be above $550 million, or Rs 4,017 crores.

JL Stream Pvt Ltd, a business specializing in live-streaming services for social networking sites, was founded and led by Kundra. He also owns Viaan Industry, a company he created in 2014 and gave his son his name. He has a lot of expensive vehicles, such as a Lamborghini and a BMW Z4.

He also owns Kinara, a Mumbai residence with a view of the ocean where he currently lives with his family. In Surrey, England, he has acquired Rajpalace, a stunning 7-bedroom home where he intends to spend his vacations with his wife, Shilpa.

Additionally, he had bought a home on the 19th floor of Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the highest building in the world. But, Shilpa sold the house in the year 2016.

The award, Recognition, Social and Literary Work

On January 20, 2020, Pranab Mukherjee, the current president of India, presented Raj Kundra with the Champion of Change Award 2019 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi for his support of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

He also lends a firm hand to his wife's charitable organization, the Shilpa Shetty Foundation, which seeks to empower and uplift orphan children by giving them access to essentials. Kundra published a book titled "How Not to Make Money" in 2013.
