Young Life

In 1960, when Banu was 16 years old, she started preparing for her screen debut in Hindi. She stated that she had very basic dance training and experience on a television station. She was not placed in the top division because her opponents were all classically trained. Banu started studying Kathak and Bharat Natyam classes and successfully finished her professional training. Soon after, she began dancing, and dancing started appearing in her movies more frequently. Becoming an almost famous actress has always been her sole ambition. It was a dream come true for her and Shammi Kapoor to land their debut acting roles in Junglee (1961), because of this depiction, she received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare Awards.

Mohammad Rafi's rendition of the well-known song "Yahoo!! Junglee Kahe Chahe Koi Mujhe" from the movie was wildly successful. Kashmiri Aghajani, also known as Kashmiri and Agha Jani, the author of Junglee and a native of Lucknow with experience in Urdu poetry and literature, also taught the actress how to deliver Urdu dialogue. With Junglee, she started her illustrious acting career. She was a popular character in various love romances and was known as the romantic lead. She repeated her role as Shammi Kapoor, the original inspiration for her in the Manmohan Desai-directed film Bluff Master.
