# Excel WEEKNUM() Function

The WEEKNUM() function in excel returns the week number from 1 to 54 of a specific date in a year. The WEEKNUM function starts counting with the week that contains January 1 and, by default, weeks begin on Sunday.

Syntax

WEEKNUM (serial_num, [return_type])

### Parameter

serial_num (required)- This parameter represents the date from which you want to extract the year part.

return_type(optional)- This parameter represents the day from which the week begins. The default value is 1.

This function returns the week number from 1 to 54 of a specific date in a year.

#### Example 1

Objective: Get the week number for a date given in Col A

 Col A Result Formula 11/15/2019 46 =WEEKNUM(A20) 1/23/1918 4 =WEEKNUM(A21) 2/3/2012 5 =WEEKNUM(A22) 7/5/2016 28 =WEEKNUM(A23)

Objective: Get the week number for a date given in a cell Col A. Week starts from Monday

 Col A Result Formula 11/15/2019 46 =WEEKNUM(A20,2) 1/23/1918 4 =WEEKNUM(A21,2) 2/3/2012 5 =WEEKNUM(A22,2) 7/5/2016 28 =WEEKNUM(A23,2)

#### Example 3

Objective: Calculate the number of weeks pending in the current year, week starting from Thursday.

 Col A Result Formula 15-Nov-19 6 =WEEKNUM(DATE(2018,12,31),14)-WEEKNUM(TODAY(),14)
