Full Form of DIY: DIY- Do it yourself
We often hear the term DIY. We all know this acronym DIY stands for “Do it yourself.” It is an easy and straightforward concept. But DIY can have different meanings for different people as DIY is about several things and concepts.
In general, DIY refers to doing a particular task on your own instead of hiring a professional or an expert to do that task.
For example- You choose to do the task or create a particular product on your own instead of buying it from a shop or store. So DIY has a broader meaning of seeking knowledge, developing or enhancing skills so that you can easily do that task, instead of asking someone else to do it and then paying them for that task.
DIY or Do it Yourself is a method or way of building, altering, or even repairing objects or things without any direct help from a professional. As per the research, DIY refers to the behaviour where people get engaged in the raw or semi-raw materials, then produce the product, transform it or even reconstruct using the material available.
DIY can be easily activated by several motivations like benefits, lack of product availability, cost of the product, etc.
DIY or do it yourself has a culture and history that can be traced back to the 18th and 19th century. At that time, it mostly comprised of home craft, but then around 1930 the concept of DIY expanded.
There was the commencement of leisure craft activities, hobbies, and so on.
The term DIY has been associated with small home improvements, maintenance activities since 1912, but this term can to everyday and regular use in 1950. There was advancement in DIY activities, home improvement projects, small craft projects for both leisure purposes and to save costs.
Then with the passage of time, DIY has comprised of a broader meaning, and not it covers numerous activities, range of skill sets. DIY is more of a self-made culture that includes designing, creation, and customisation, and repair, alteration without any specific or certain course or training.
DIY over the years has become a concept that includes ideas, designs, techniques, methods. These are shared by the people in the community or society through various means- the internet, videos, or even offline (in-person).
DIY is a reaction to the growing technology, modernity, increasing specialisation. As in-depth knowledge and specialisation have brought together the people with the same focus area in a large context. So people have become fully engaged to the concept.
Also, there has been the emergence of the DIY ethic. This refers to the ethic of being self-sufficient with the help of completing the task without any help from a paid expert. This idea promotes that anyone is capable and can perform various tasks rather than being dependent on the specialist.
There has been growth and emergence of DIY and even DIY resources like videos, articles, blogs, groups. More people blog, portray their experiences about it on various websites and even offline. The scope of DIY has gone beyond magazine, television.

DIY has become prevalent amongst all the industries, but the most common industry for DIY is the Fashion industry, sub-culture, Music, Craft(Artistic), Film.
DIY is most common amongst the fashion community. The idea and concept for the same are shared on youtube about clothing, jewellery, make-up, hairstyle. There are various techniques that are promoted like bleaching jeans, designing clothes, T-shirts. DIY has undoubtedly grown more with the art and design industry. There are numerous ideas, concepts that come up almost every day.
DIY was put forth through the punk movement in 1970. Instead of traditional means of promoting bands, alternative modes were followed and practices through DIY touring, manufacturing albums, etc.
DIY includes- self-publishing books, alternative comics, homemade articles or products – which are based on the concept of recycling, reusing, and reducing; craft like knitting, crochet, handmade card, jewellery, business card; electronic, etc. are considered to be included under DIY only.
A subpart or portion of making the film like making a film on a low budget, skeleton crew, simple or funk props are part of DIY in the film industry.

India- In India, Jugaad is term used for DIY. It refers to uncommon and innovative ways or hacks to do the task or activity. It is innovative fix, creativity to fix or make things work or create new things using resources.
USA- In the USA, Rasquache is the term, it issued to describe certain art forms, which are used to overcome limitations that are faced by the artisans or artists.
