Full Form of GATE- Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering

GATE is the abbreviated form of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Gate is an entrance test that is held on an annual basis for admission to several programs of post-graduate in the field of science and technology in India.

The exam is held, managed, governed, administered collectively by the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Technology. This exam is commissioned by the Ministry of Higher Education and Human Resources Department (HRD) of the Government of India.

GATE is a form of ability test for engineering graduate students. This is an entrance examination that is held every year for admission to various science and technology graduate courses in India. This exam is conducted in the months of Jan or Feb of each year. This exam is conducted on the computer, majorly of three hours duration. This exam tests the candidate for having a understanding of the engineering course. GATE scores are logical, legitimate for three years. The score expresses the ability, accomplishment of candidates in a specific subject.

Presently, various public sector companies in India have also been using GATE scores to employ capable graduate engineers for subordinate or entry-level posts. This is one of the immensely competitive exams in India and usually comprises cut-throat competition amongst the students. GATE has also been accepted and acknowledged by several institutions outside India, such as Nanyang Technological University.

Financial Help or Funding

For funding of various programs, the GATE exam or test is used as a prerequisite for various program funding (e-scholarships), though the standards or specifications vary from institution to institution. For students, the financial aid or scholarship was increased from Rs.8000 (US$110) per month to Rs. 12,400 (US$170) per month, which is a substantial increase of 55%.

Qualification or Eligibility

In order to be eligible to appear for the GATE exam, there are certain specification that are required to be fulfilled;

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor ofEngineering/Technology/Architecture / Post diploma) And even students of final year B.Tech are eligible for the same.
  • Candidates with a master's degree inscience/mathematics/statistics/computer applications or equivalent subjects are also eligible for the exam
  • Candidates that are in the second or even fourth year of Master's degree program in Engineering or technology.
  • An applicant is entitled to professional associations recognized by UPSC or AICTE, e.g., B. AMIE, AMICE, as these titles are equal to B., B.Tech. 
  • There is no age limit. Criteria set by the examining authority to appear in GATE.

Objectives of the GATE exam

  • It is carried out to get admitted in post-graduate applications in engineering and technological know-how stream. 
  • It is a test for examining or checking the ability of the student for entry-stage engineering jobs. GATE rating is utilized by many PSUs for the employment of applicants, e.g., BARC, BHEL, HPCL, NTPC, etc. 
  • This exam, its scores, makes the applicants eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR backed projects
  • Last but not least, this exam allows picking out capable engineers and helps them in selecting their regions of studies to pursue.

Duration of Exam Structure

 The exam is of three hours duration and consists of a complete of sixty-five questions, maximum of 100 marks. The exam for all of the papers is performed in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode wherein the applicants are provided the questions in a random series.

The questions encompass a few Multiple Choice Questions or MCQs (In which options are provided, and the candidate needs to select the correct choice.)

The remaining questions can be of Multiple Select Questions or MSQs (4 solution alternatives out of which MORE than ONE can be the right or accurate choice), and/or Numerical Answer Type questions or NATs 

Syllabus

  1. Verbal Ability: In this, the candidate is tested of English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, phrase groups, instructions, important reasoning, and verbal deduction. 
  2. Numerical Ability: In this, the student is tested on numerical ability through Numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning, and records interpretation. Engineering Mathematics (only for selective subject paper) 
  3. Technical Ability: Technical questions associated with the Paper chosen

 Questions and staining scheme

  • The exam will encompass altogether sixty-five questions,consisting one or two mark questions each.
  • Out of sixty-five questions, ten questions could be from General Aptitude, and fifty-five questions could be Technical, primarily based totally on the Paper chosen. 
  • The General Aptitude segment could have five One-mark questions and five Two-mark questions, accounting for approximately 15% of overall marks. 
  • The Technical segmentconsist of 25 questions of  one-mark each questions and 30 questions of  Two-marks, which comprises ofapprox 85% ofmarks. 
  • The exam also deducts marks for incorrect MCQ solutions. Usually, 1/third of unique marks could be deducted for incorrect MCQ solutions simultaneously as there aren't any deductions for MSQs and NATs. 
  • Also, there may be NO partial credit score for MSQs and NATs.

Result 

  • The Gate result or scores are typically declared approximately one month after the test. 
  • The final result clearly shows the complete score secured by the candidate, which is known as the GATE score, the all-India rank (AIR), and the cut-off marks for various categories in the student's paper. The score has a validity of 3 years.
