IMAO Full Form

IMAO stands for In My Arrogant Opinion. It is a slang internet acronym that is similar to LOL (Laugh Out Loud), BTW (By The Way), etc. It is generally used in text messaging on the internet as it takes less time to type just a few characters than a complete phrase. Here, arrogant means an act of showing yourself or your words superior to somebody else by using an offensive attitude. Hence, IMAO is used with a sense of irony or self-deprecation, giving own opinion more strongly, or humorously undermining someone’s opinion.

ORIGIN OF IMAO

IMAO is derived from another acronym IMHO which means ‘In My Humble Opinion’. IMHO is used in the sense of request while IMAO is used in the sense of commanding and in a harsh manner. This prohibits the use of this acronym for formal or official discussion. The abbreviation got huge popularity after 1989. This was because of its use in a Usenet conversation that was related to the jam band The Grateful Dead. A post was shared by a user named, David Vinayak Wallace. In his post, he said: “OK then, let me cast some kerosene onto the fire. IMAO this is how I would rate various periods of the band’s history”. When the post goes viral, 30,000 messages were sent by the users to ask the meaning of IMAO. Later, at the end of the post, a postscript was added by Mr. Wallace to make the term understandable.

After this, it was started to use IMAO in different debates and conversation. In the discussions of Usenet groups, the abbreviation was used 8 times. It was also used to accuse the opponent of being homophobic. Its meaning is clear from its origin, i.e., IMAO is considered being a forceful and impulsive statement with heavy irony. By the year 1993, the abbreviation got viral and started to use on the internet in hot discussion on various platforms such as SMS, messengers, e-mails, etc. In the 1990s and 2000s, IMAO became milder in tone but its popularity and use never slow down like its counterpart, IMHO.
