CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average

CGPA Full Form

CGPA is the abbreviated form of Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is an educational system used for grading. This grading system is used in schools, colleges to evaluate, assess the academic performance, efficiency of the students with different grades like A, B, C, D, or F.The students are given different grades depending on their performance. This is an average of the grade points achieved by the students in all the semesters, in all the subjects after the completion of the academic term or the entire course.

GPA or the Grade Point Averages is also known as the grading average, but this is usually for one term and not the entire term or the course or semesters.

Different countries have different grading systems, but in India, the system of grades is very much dependent on the percentage achieved by the student. This system of grading varies from country to country depending on their approach, idea, concept, etc.

The Method of Calculating CGPA from the Percentage

The steps or the method that is used to calculate the percentage of the marks is;

First of all percentage of marks of each subject is calculated – 9.5X Subject GP

Then in order to calculate the Overall Marks percentage – 9.5 x Overall CGPA

The easy and best way to calculate CGPA

The most easy, convenient way to calculate CGPA is;

  1. Simply add the grade points of all the five subjects
  2. Then divide the result obtained with five
  3. The final result that is obtained is the Cumulative Grade Points Average or CGPA.

Let us understand it better with the help of an example like;

Consider a student or the candidate has a 7.9 CGPA in totality, and then the percentage of a candidate or the applicant can be evaluated as;

Overall percentage of marks = 9.5 x 7.9

And the overall percentage of the marks is 75.05%

As per the Indian CGPA system,

Percentage                    CGPA                                   Category

90 % – 100%                A+ or O                             Excellent

79 % – 80 %                A                                            First class

50 % – 69 %                B+                                          Second class

40 % – 49 %                B                                            Pass

Less than 39 %            F                                            Fail

Advantages of CGPA

  • The CGPA has helped in reducing the stress of the students; it has provided them with the advantage of studying without any stress or pressure.
  • The CGPA is a grading system or an educational system that relies or is based on the developed marking structure.
  • The CGPA is an educational grading system that aids or assists in helping the students or the candidates in identifying their deficiency or ability.
  • The CGPA is a grading mechanism that helps in making studies more easy or quick in many respects.

Disadvantages of CGPA

  • The CGPA system limits the achieving ability of the students and helps them achieve less due to the educational grading system.
  • The CGPA demotivates the students or the candidates that achieve more in comparison to those performing less. As both the high achiever and low achiever come in the same category of percentage.
  • The CGPA system fails to show the accurate performance of the students; we can get to know that the grade achieved or acquired by the candidate and not the actual ability.
