Full Form of DSLR

DSLR Full Form

What is a DSLR? Many of us have DSLR cameras nowadays, but how many of us know the true meaning or the full form of this abbreviation. Not many! We are using these products and we know them through their short forms. So let’s discuss what DSLR is and what is its full form and meaning.

Well, the full form of DSLR is Digital Single-lens Reflex Camera. It can be called DSLR or Digital SLR. It is one of the finest forms of technology that we have today. Photographers, Designers, etc have these DSLR cameras to put forth their talent in various industries. This digital camera is capable of combining the optics with the mechanism of the lens with the help of the digital imaging sensor. A DSLR camera includes the following parts:

  • Camera Lens
  • ReflexMirror
  • Focal–Plane Shutter
  • Image Sensor
  • Matte Focusing Screen
  • Condenser Lens
  • Pentaprism or Pentamirror
  • Viewfinder eyepiece

These are the crucial parts of a DSLR camera and the photographer must know why each part is required for. These parts are crucial in terms of taking both a mirror image and a plane image. Now, you must be wondering what is the difference between the DSLR camera and other digital cameras? Well, the only difference between a DSLR and other digital cameras is the reflex design.

Now, what happens in a reflex design? Well, in this design the light travels through the lens which is followed by traveling through the mirror. After the light travels, the image captured is sent to a prism through which we can see the image in the viewfinder. The DSLR camera does not use a secondary lens. Rather the viewfinder presents the image which is captured by the sensor. The sensor presents an optical view of the image. It is important to note that the DSLR camera has replaced the film-based SLRs from the year 2000.

Now, let us look at some of the key features of DSLR cameras.

  1. Mode Dial:

The DSLR cameras have mode dials (also called as ‘PASM’ dial) which help largely in the camera scene–mode settings. There are certain modes in DSLR camera like aperture–priority, shutter–priority, manual modes, etc. The modes differ from camera to camera. The scene modes of a DSLR camera include landscape, portrait, action, night, silhouette, and others.

  • Dust Reduction System:

The first DSLR i.e. Sigma SD9 introduced a method of preventing dust from entering the lens. Olympus Corporation built the sensor cleaning mechanism in Sigma SD9. With the help of these dust reducing systems, the DSLR is less prone to damage.

  • Interchanging of Lens:

One of the best features of a DSLR camera is that it has interchangeable lenses. One can choose from the given lenses which will be fit for the current photography. Apart from the primary lens, there are special lenses that can be attached to the camera to provide the perfect shot. Due to this feature, DSLR cameras are becoming popular.

  • Live Preview:

The DSLRs which are manufactured now have the ability of a live review. The live review is useful in underwater photography wherein the viewfinder cannot be put to use. In such situations, the camera is in a waterproof case and provides the optical image.

  • Better Image Quality:

With the help of large sensors, the quality of the photograph improves. Image sensors come in various sizes. The large sensors are used for capturing medium format images. Both small and large sensors are used in getting the best quality photograph. The sensors of the cameras are measured in megapixels. The cameras with large sensors tend to have better megapixel ratings. Thus, to have better image quality, large sensors are used.

There is a lot of difference between the DSLR and other digital cameras. The sensor size varies, the performance varies and the optical views and digitally created image also differs. The DSLRs of the early period and the present time vary in functions and parts. For instance, there were no interchangeable lenses or dust reducing systems in the early models of DSLRs. But now, the product and the models both have changed. Thus, if anyone wants to have better quality images then one must invest in these DSLR cameras.
