ITI or Industrial Training Institute is a training organization held by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to provide post-secondary school students training and give them industry-related education. However, students who have completed their 8th grade can also apply for some ITI trade courses.”

Industrial Training Institutes are set up to impart the industrial knowledge and technical information on the high school students who are interested in expanding their technical expertise rather than pursuing with higher education. ITI was founded by the ‘Directorate-General for Employment and Training’ (DGET), the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, and the Union's Government to render various trades training. It aims to impart training to students who just passed 10th standard in various Engineering and Non-Engineering trades that are given below:

The purpose of setting up Industrial Training Institutes in India was to provide technical human resources to the swiftly evolving industrial division. The courses covered in the ITI's are planned to impart all the skills and knowledge required in a trade. Towards the end of the course, the student must undergo practical training in their preferred industry for at least one or two years. Although practical industry training is a mandatory standard set by the government and the students are granted to National Council of Vocational Training (NVCT) certificate only after completing the training. Industrial Training Institutes are located in PAN India like UP, Kerala, Punjab, Gujarat, Assam, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, etc. Some training companies also pay a stipend to their trainees on a regular basis.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility specifications may vary from Course to Course. Some of the general criteria elements are given below:

  • The applicant should have passed the post-secondary (10th standard) from an approved board. Or any other exam accepted as post-secondary (10th standard).
  • The applicant should have obtained 35% or more aggregate.
  • The age of the candidate must be between 14 to 40 years during the time of admission.

Types of ITI Course

ITI courses are categorized into the following two types:

  1. Engineering trades: Engineering trade courses are focused on technical aspects of industries. It concentrates on delivering information on engineering, maths, science, and technology theories.
  2. Non-engineering trades: Non-engineering trade courses do not include any technical certification. They typically focus on languages, speaking skills, and other sector-specific knowledge and expertise.

The admission process of ITI

Both the Government and some superior private institutions enroll the students on the basis of their merit. Such organizations conduct a written test to select eligible candidates. Some private institutes have a direct process of admission if the candidate has passed post-secondary (10th standard).
