What is a Model Number?

The Model number is a number given to each product that is assigned by the manufacturers of the product. The Model number is unique and used in all products to differentiate types of products.

The Model number combines the English alphabet, digits, and characters. These numbers represent a product's brand, design, and performance of a product build. But there is no specific format defining how to structure these; companies are given the freedom to design them as they want to use them.

Significance of a model number

These numbers help manufacturers to trace each device, and they can help to replace the hardware device as needed. Model numbers also help get information about the features offered by the product, higher models of the same product generally indicate the addition of new technologies and features, and it tries to replace the drawbacks present in older versions. But this may not always be true for all products.

These model numbers help the customers differentiate between products that were manufactured by the same manufacturer that look similar.

Where do I find the model number?

When we refer to a model number, always take it from the product sticker. Please do not take it from the model number sticker in front of the computer.

For example, look at the below sample picture containing the model number and serial number:

But many times, we may lose this product sticker if our laptop or computer is very old. In that situation also, we can find the model number by following the below steps:

  1. Click start on windows.
  2. Find the System Information then choose the top result to open the app.
  3. Choose System Summary.
  4. Finally, under system model, we will get the model number.

Location of Model number on the product

Model numbers are seen mostly on the back, bottom, or sides of a product. In mobile phones, we can find model numbers by navigating through settings > about phone > model, or we can directly get it from the space left for the battery (battery compartment).

Example:

SM-G920P for Samsung galaxy phone.

The model number for iPhone

To get the model number on iPhone, look into the settings, then general, and then about. At the right of the model number heading, you will find the number, which includes text like letters and alphabets.

What is a Model Number

In an iPhone 8 or later, the model number is present in the SIM tray slot. The model number is present on the upper side (display side).

When coming to iPhone 7 or earlier, the model number is found on the backside of the device.

Are Model numbers always unique?

No, model numbers are not always unique, and the same model number is mostly used with different brand units. But one thing which is important is that one specific combination of brand and model numbers together as a unit is unique.

How is serial number different from the model number?

We always see the model number and serial number on the product sticker, and these together helps to find out a specific product.

The model number is used to differentiate between device models, for example, iPhone 8, iPhone X, etc.

The serial number is used for identification. Every device has a unique serial number, abbreviated as S/N. The serial number makes sure that the product matches you.
