What is a Server?
The computer which processes the request and delivers the data to the other client over any network is called a Server. The server could be local or internet.
These are specialized to do dedicated work, unlike other computers that we see around.
Servers are made to work for a more extended period which is why they are durable and sustainable.
What are they used for?
Servers manages and maintains the resources provided over a network.
A user might set up a server to take over the control of the access across the network for a specific task like emails or hosting a website.
The server can also do computation which can be very intense. However, some servers can be assigned or made for particular or specific tasks, which we can term as dedicated servers. A user can deploy even multiple websites on a web server.
Does Server Goes OFF:
Any server should not be turned off in any case because a server is accessed constantly. Its services are required for a continuous period of time.
By any chance, if a server goes down, it causes many problems for the user and server authority and a lot of loss. For this, servers are generally made for avoiding failure.
How does another machine connect to a server?
In general, the server gets connected to the other computer by any local network. The server is connected by router or switch to all other computers.
When all the computers connected to the network gets connected to the router, they can access the server's resources.
For reference: A user gets connected to a web server through the internet from which it can access the website and its features like search and view content.
Where are servers stored?
A server and its other types of equipment are generally kept away from ordinary people.
They are kept in any closet or glass house in any company.
These servers contain sensitive information, which is why they are isolated from others. They need to be avoided from unauthorized access of it.
Server remote is generally located in a data center.
These servers are installed, or any other company manages hardware, and then the configuration is done by any company that wants to own it.
Can a Normal PC be a server?
Yes, making any computer that could be your home desktop, laptop, or any computer to act as a server is possible. With the right software and the proper configuration, everything is possible.
For reference, any user could install any File Transfer Protocol server program so that they can share files among the computer or devices over your network.
Keep in mind that you can do that to your computer, but it is not recommended because you must run that particular computer constantly. It can also make your devices vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Server components:
Physical servers generally comprise the same components as a simple desktop.
These are the parts required for the building of a server.
Motherboard
The component is used to put all the parts together. A motherboard's efficiency and size define the speed and storage that a server can accumulate.
A motherboard that supports high-speed storage makes the server fast, whereas a giant motherboard helps use large numbers of hard drives.
Central Processing Unit
This component has control over all functions of a server.
It is the center of all the processes that happen in a server.
Memory
A part that dictates the storage of the server. It should be compatible with the motherboard; otherwise, the user will not have a better experience.
Hard drives
Storage is used to store the user data along with the software data.
Power Supply
A server needs a lot of energy to do its functions compared to a standard desktop because it serves multiple devices.
Network Connection
A server must connect with the network connection to function. An efficient network helps a server function effectively to receive requests and respond to them.
The Function of a Server
The primary function of a server is to provide services and functionality to other computers by accessing, holding, and transferring data from other machines over the computer network.
Types of Server
Web Server
It is a type of server that works on HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) and other protocols to respond to the request made by the client over the internet.
In basic terms, it is a device that stores web content and is used to host websites.
Multiple computers deliver web pages and web content to multiple users.
Below are examples of web server software:
Apache Web Server: official Apache website.
Nginx: official Nginx website
Proxy Server
It works as an intermediate medium between a host and client. A proxy server can send data from a host to the client device, but the data has to pass through the proxy server.
It adds an extra layer of protection to the connection.
When the data is requested from the host, it is not sent directly to the client, which may contain some harmful entities. These harmful entities can be filtered out through the proxy server.
File Transfer Protocol Server
File Transfer Protocol Servers send the file from one device to another. Uploaded files are sent to the FTP server, not the other device, and then it is downloaded to another device.
File Transfer Protocols are sets of rules and instructions that use a server to share files from one computer to another safely.
Application Server
An Application Server is designed to host applications and their features to the client. These types of servers connect clients virtually to software applications. This user does not have to download an application on his system, which saves a lot of memory.
Application servers can easily host many applications to clients simultaneously, making them exceptionally reliable, inexpensive, and ideal for business purposes.
File Server:
As the name suggests, this server helps to store the data which is accessed by multiple users.
File Server offers fast retrieval and saving or overwriting of the file for a client. It is one of the basic types of servers that organizations generally use.
Database Server:
Database servers work as big storage spaces that efficiently organize the data and files, so organizations use these to run multiple programs to meet their needs. A database server can efficiently work on any database architecture.
Mail Server:
A mail server is used by the mail services to store and deliver mail by the clients.
Mail servers are set up like that so that they should be connected continuously to the network So that an individual user can easily access their email and shouldn't need to run any systems.
Monitoring and Management Servers:
These servers can function for many tasks. Primarily they track and keep a record of digital transactions.
Some of the servers only monitor the user activities, and they don't participate in it. Monitoring servers help in surveying the network to check various threats that may affect the connection. These only give responsiveness to network administrators.
Print Server
In this type of server, a simple single device is responsible for the management of one or multiple printers on its local network.
It does not require any fast computer. It only calls for a standard computer.
Blade
A blade can be referred in two ways :
1.A blade, also sometimes termed an expansion module, is hardware that is installed in the case.
It works somewhat like an expansion card in a computer but with additional facilities and over a broader scale.
For reference, if a switch that supports the blade allows customization, the user can add the fiber blades if more fiber lines are required.
2. In the context of servers, a blade server is a high-density server that can hold multiple types of servers, just like a rack mount.
A blade server is used because it saves space and easily maintains numerous servers together.
SAS
There are two ways in which this is referred:
1. Short for Serial Attached SCSI, SAS is a serial transmission replacement for the parallel SCSI. SAS is an improvement of traditional SCSI that supports a maximum of 128 simultaneous devices at transmission speeds of 3.0 Gb/s. SAS devices have two data ports and can communicate with SCSI and SATA.
2.Stand Alone server is a type of server that is independent of any services and other servers.
Cloud computing
Cloud computing is a term that describes services which are provided over a network by a collection of remote servers. Cloud of computers provides massive, distributed storage, and processing power that can be accessed by any Internet-connected device which runs a web browser.
