Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is a digital experience that simulates the real world but is different from the real world. It is completely generated by the computer and does not affect the real world.

It is a 3D environment inside the computer that may or may not reflect the real world. The machine creates the 3D environment with the help of its information and the data from the human senses.

It created a virtual environment that can provide different experiences to its users and be used for many different purposes like education, entertainment, medical sector etc.

Software for VR

To create a virtual reality inside the computer, much software is required, and for a 3D environment, a lot of hardware is also required for the immersive experience.

Apart just from creating a virtual environment inside the computer, it should be close to reality; that is when it will be called the reality that is virtual, aka virtual reality.

VR software is used to build experiences for the user to test products virtually, learn something new, and build something new.

Hardware for VR

To experience the virtual world, only software is not thing. Hardware tools like VR glasses, VR gloves, and others are also required to take a person inside virtual reality.

In the hardware part of the VR, there is a computer with a graphics rendering unit to create images. The output devices include a VR headset and an audio output device which work together with the computer information to provide the 3D environment to the user.

VR environment is created by the computer that depicts the real world. In a virtual environment, things are not prefixed. Still, they are generated on the spot by the computer, so it is very important to have fast-performing hardware components like the frame rate of VR screens and audio devices for audio changes.

Still, any delay in the performance of the hardware and software components can make the user feel that it is a virtual environment created by the computer and nothing is real.

Applications of virtual reality

The most common areas for implementation of VR are video games, 3D cinema and social media. Game companies in the 90s released the first headsets for experiencing VR. After the start of the 90s, commercial headsets for VR were released by many companies like Sony, HTC and Oculus. 3D cinema has already been used for sporting events, pornography, fine art, music videos and short films.

Since 2015, theme parks have also used VR to give visitors a hepatic experience. There is a case of VR exposure therapy for treating disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder and phobias.

VR program is also used in the treatment of patients who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. With VR, real patients' real experiences are simulated, giving them a chance to experience those events they cannot experience now due to their current state. VR applications are effective in treating many neurological problems.

Loneliness depression is seen in elderly persons and can be tackled with VR. VR can make the person experience ageing not in a place but outside the world where they cannot navigate easily because it gives exposure therapy in a safe place.

In medicine, VR surgical environments were developed in the 1990s, and under the supervision of experts, it provides training at a low cost that allows trainees to correct themselves.

In the fast-paced and globalized business world, meetings in VR are used to create an environment in which interactions with other people can feel more natural than a phone call or video chat. In the customizable meeting rooms, all parties can join using the VR headset and interact as if they are in the same physical room. Presentations, videos or 3D models can be uploaded and interacted with.

Compared to traditional text-based CMC, Avatar-based interactions in 3D virtual environments lead to higher consensus, satisfaction, and cohesion among group members.

VR can simulate real workspaces for workplace occupational safety, health, and educational and training purposes. It can provide learners with a virtual environment where they can develop their skills without the real-world consequences of failing.

It has been used in primary education, military, flight simulators, and bridge inspection. Immersive VR engineering systems enable engineers to see virtual prototypes before the availability of any physical prototypes. Supplementing training with virtual training environments has been claimed to offer avenues of realism in military and healthcare training while minimizing cost.

It also has been claimed to reduce military training costs by minimizing the ammunition expended during training periods. VR is also used for healthcare training and education for medical practitioners.

In engineering, VR has proved very useful for both engineering educators and students. A previously expensive cost in the educational department, now being much more accessible due to lower overall costs, has proven to be useful in educating future engineers.

The most significant element lies in the students' ability to interact with 3-D models that accurately respond based on real-world possibilities. This added tool of education provides much of the immersion needed to grasp complex topics and be able to apply them. As noted, future architects and engineers benefit greatly by understanding spatial relationships and providing solutions based on real-world applications.

The first uses of VR in museum settings began in the 1990s, significantly increasing in the mid-2010s. As technology developed, more artistic programs, including feature films, were produced after the 90s. Additionally, museums have begun making some of their content virtual reality accessible.

Virtual reality's growing market presents an opportunity and an alternative channel for digital marketing. It is also seen as a new platform for e-commerce, particularly in the bid to challenge traditional "brick and mortar" retailers. However, a 2018 study revealed that most goods are still purchased in physical stores.

In education, VR has demonstrated the capability of promoting higher order thinking, the interest and commitment of students, acquisition of knowledge, and mental habits and understanding that are generally useful within an academic context.

Including VR technology in the context of public libraries could give users access to virtual, interactive copies of rare texts, artefacts, and tours of famous landmarks and archaeological digs. It would give library users access to cutting-edge technology and unique educational experiences.

A growing interest in the metaverse has resulted in organizational efforts to incorporate the many diverse virtual reality applications into ecosystems like VIVERSE, reportedly offering connectivity between platforms for various uses.
